Multiplying Fractions and Mixed Numbers 3 X 1

Step 1: Convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions. 3 = 7 X 3 = 21 + 4 = 25 1 = 5 X 1 = 5 + 3 = 8

Step 2: Rewrite the problem with the new improper fractions. X=

Step 3: Look at cross products and see if you can simplify. 7 and 8 cannot be simplified. 25 and 5 can both be divided by 5. 25 ÷ 5 = 5 and 5 ÷ 5 = 1. X 5 1

Step 4: Multiply the numerators. X = 5 x 8 = 40

Step 5: Multiply the denominators. X 7 x 1 = 7

Step 6: Simplify the product if possible. In most cases, you will need to convert the improper fraction back to a mixed number! =5 40 7 5 35 5 5 7
