Fiction vs. Non-Fiction Introduce the concept of fiction and non-fiction through the use of the images. Provide specifics on the fantasy images that make it fiction. Provide details on the other two images that are proven factual. Students will begin to grasp the understanding between what is fiction and non-fiction.

Captions A caption explains what a picture, chart, graph, or map is about. Captions are found near a picture, chart, graph, or maps Example of a caption: This is an image of a monarch caterpillar taken at a butterfly garden in Florida.

Explain how the following books on the next slide are either fiction or nonfiction.

Decide whether the book is fiction or nonfiction Decide whether the book is fiction or nonfiction. Have students explain why the book is fiction or nonfiction. Refrain from using real and not real. In other words, students should be able to explain and dialogue the components of a fiction and non-fiction book, utilizing academic vocabulary.
