The Play of the Diary of Anne Frank Act 1, Scene 2

Act 1, Scene 2: The Franks arrive at the Annex. Everyone is a bit paranoid. They set about getting organized. The illegal Ration Books cause Mrs Frank to feel uncomfortable (black / white market).

Act 1, Scene 2: House Rules include: – No noise or unnecessary movement between 08h00 and 18h00. – No running water (either from the sink or toilet) between 08h00 and 18h00. – All rubbish must be burned at night. – No one is to go beyond the door to the Annex.

Act 1, Scene 2: Anne is full of energy and fun and is glad to have Peter to tease. Margot, Anne and Peter will continue their education: – “There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind.” [Otto Frank]

Explain fully. – You tell me … What is the significance of the Star of David? Why did Jews have to wear it on every item of clothing? – The Star of David is a Jewish religious symbol. Jews were required to wear it on their clothing in public so that the Nazi’s could identify Jews and target them for persecution. Why is Peter so determined to burn his Star of David? – Peter realizes that he won’t be leaving the Annex any time soon so he won’t need it anymore. (He might also sees it as symbol of Nazi oppression and want to rid himself of all reminders. )
