1 Why did Anne Frank move to Amsterdam?
Hitler came into power with the Nazi party. Anti-Jewish decrees were made across Germany Anne’s father had a jam making business in Amsterdam.

2 Hitler and the Nazi Party!
From 1933 onwards the Nazi party, lead by Hitler, came to power in Germany. This began a dark chapter in Germany’s history. Many innocent people were persecuted. This happened to the Jews and many others such as gypsies, blacks and gays. All because they were different and not the same as Hitler’s image. Hitler had an image of perfect German people called “Aryans”.They were better than others.

3 The Anti-Jewish Decrees…
Many laws were made of what Jews could and couldn’t do, Anne describes some of these in her diary….. “Jews were required to wear a yellow star, Jews were forbidden to use trams, Jews were required to turn in their bicycles,Jews were forbidden to use any public sports centres, Jews were not allowed to watch any form of entertainment and so on”

4 The Opekta company Anne’s father, Otto Frank had a jam-making business in Amsterdam. This was called Opekta. He moved the family to Amsterdam because he had arranged a hiding place above the warehouse of his business.

5 Why did Otto move his family to Amsterdam?
He could foresee the problems that he and his family would have if they stayed in Germany. He was trying to escape the persecution and segregation. He didn’t want his family to be subjected to Anti-Jewish laws and decrees made by Hitler. Jews were treated like equals in Holland and the Netherlands. Otto had somewhere to work in Amsterdam
