UIT Forums Using Video to Enhance Teaching and Learning 11/12/09 David Grogan, Manager – Curricular Technology Group, UIT-AT

Agenda: Introductions (5 mins) David Grogan – Medical School, The Gordon Institute, Department of Education (10 mins) Dr. Cheryl Blaze – Vet School (10 mins) Nicole Cottam – Vet School (10 mins) Dr. John Rush – Vet School (10 mins) AT Services – Pilot toolkit (5 mins) Discussion (10 mins)

Medical School: Dr. Robert Kalish Records his medical students conducting examinations with “model patients”. Dr. Kalish and students use Spark MediaMarkup to annotate the recording with their observations. 50https://spark.uit.tufts.edu/video_view2.jsp?id=2 50

The Gordon Institute: Mary Viola Records students giving presentations and in role playing situations. Student group and instructors provide feedback. 11https://spark.uit.tufts.edu/video_view2.jsp?id=2 11

The Gordon Institute: 1.How effective has the use of video been? –“Extremely effective. Students very much value observing themselves doing presentations. Initially we only videoed their presentations in the first year of the program. But they unanimously asked us to do all of their presentations over the two years because it was so helpful to them. Instructors have also benefited from the videos of the student presentations. It is nice to be able to go back and review the students performance as part of grade evaluation as well as the 'coaching' that we do.”

The Gordon Institute: 2. What are the most significant barriers to its use? –“[ITS] have been a great help in recording the videos. It is better than hiring a single student whose schedule may not work out with our needs. However, the issue has been how to get the video onto Blackboard or spark for viewing and/or use of media markup tool. Right now, the tasks are scattered among too many people.”

The Gordon Institute: 3. What would you do differently if you could? –“We are moving to a direction of recording all of our lectures. With the adoption of on-line learning, students are expecting to be able to review the lecture at a later time. We need to come up with a system--that does not burden the instructor and does not require excessive labor. I am leaning toward assigning it to a dept assistant so that there is a single person responsible. This would also help with what I said above.”

Department of Education: Phil Gay Produces videos that showcase his department to support recruiting efforts. Department supports students recording themselves in classroom settings for their “digital portfolios” ass+Videohttps://wikis.uit.tufts.edu/confluence/display/MBartolanzoDT/Cl ass+Video

Department of Education: 1.How effective has the use of video been? –“In terms of our department, the videos we have placed on our website have been able to provide a new identity for the department, showcasing a variety of programs, events, and personalities, and enhancing recruitment as a way to excite potential students about what we do- additionally, video is an integral part of research in the early algebra project, and for our Master of Arts Teaching students, it provides a way to have them document and reflect on their practice as pre-service teacher.”

Department of Education: 2. What are the most significant barriers to its use? –“There is still resistance to the process of shooting, digitizing, and editing as these are skills that require time.. also, the lack of a uniform platform for editing sophisticated projects is still a work in progress -- also, although the toolbox we have developed is intuitive, it could still be simplified to browse for a file and upload, similar to the way one posts a podcast, as opposed to writing the html. Maybe File>Insert>Video can be added for the future.”

The Gordon Institute: 3. What would you do differently if you could? –“For our MAT students I'm encouoraged by the new technology offered by Flip type cameras and free editing platforms like Google's Picasa. Because the cameras are intuitive and transferring footage is simplified, I believe this will demystify the process to the extent that students will be more willing to embrace the technology.”
