Measuring the Power of Learning.™ California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning September 10, 2015 1–2 p.m. Presented by Michael McDaniel, ETS Charlene Schmid, CDE

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 2 Purpose This Webcast will help attendees understand: Key attributes of the formative assessment process How to access the Digital Library and filter for specific resources Training modules and forums LEA support for promoting teacher use of the digital library resources

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 3 Formative Assessment Process Defined Formative assessment is a deliberate process used by teachers and students during instruction that provides actionable feedback that is used to adjust ongoing teaching and learning strategies to improve students’ attainment of curricular learning targets/goals.

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 4 Four Attributes of the Formative Assessment Process

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 5 Clarify Intended Learning Learning Goals: ─State what students will know by the end of the lesson. ─Describe “big ideas” or concepts that are transferable and reflect the intent of the Common Core State Standards. ─Use student-friendly language like “I can…” ─Define the criteria for success

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 6 Provides information teachers and students need to determine where students are in their progress toward the intended learning. Evidence should be closely aligned to the learning goals and is defined by the success criteria. Experts suggest that teachers and students consider student needs, interests, and learning styles when deciding how to elicit evidence. Elicit Evidence

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 7 Teachers and students interpret the evidence they collect to determine where students are in relation to the learning goals and success criteria. Students can independently analyze evidence of their own learning. Strategies are identified for actionable feedback. Interpret Evidence

Measuring the Power of Learning.™ Using Formative Assessment and the Digital Library to Support Teaching and Learning 8 Teachers and students act on evidence as identified in the analysis of evidence to move toward the learning goals. Teachers make instructional adjustments to help students move toward success. Teachers must take into consideration each student’s readiness, interests, and learning preferences. Act on Evidence
