First Visitors from Europe Columbus didn’t really “discover” America in 1492. America was visited by The Vikings from Greenland in 1001. Leif Erikson and 35 others sailed west and spent the winter in Vinland. First Visitors from Europe

The Voyages of Columbus Myth of Vinland lasted for 500 years Columbus believed he could reach Asia sailing west. Big hunk of land got in his way. The Voyages of Columbus

Columbus Grew up in Genoa 1470 settled in Portugal….. Henry the Navigator Columbus

Columbus Portugal would not finance his voyage Moved to Spain and got support from King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Still took 6 years to set sail. Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria- small 55-90 foot vessels. (Caravels) Covered about 170 miles per day. Columbus thought 21 days. Took over 2 months Columbus believed he was in the Indies. Went on to “Japan” Cuba returned to Spain January 1493. Columbus

Columbus Four voyages all together 2nd- well stocked 1500 people -17 ships All those who stayed behind were killed by Indians. Started good ---ended badly. Columbus
