Question 4: Who would be the audience for your media product? Ryder Broadbent Smith – 103B

Word of mouth campaigns and viral marketing is also more likely to catch a younger audience due to their more frequent use of social media networks. This technique has been used by many distributers and film companies to get people talking about their productions, such as Cloverfield and The Dark Knight. Core Audience The standard target audience of a Thriller film is broad, ranging from the mid-teens up to 30s-50s as they have widespread appeal. However, with our piece it’s likely to appeal more to a younger audience between as the protagonist is within the age group. Despite this, it may spread to a further audience demographic as films like Brick which are focussed on a younger generation have been successful. Following Thriller convention our feature would be non-gender specific as we wouldn’t want to isolate our audience further. Our film centres around a deeper story and it’s script rather than high-adrenaline action, as seen in something like Collateral. Those who have an interest in the detective genre would also be compelled to see out feature as it follows a similar genre to the Sherlock television series, Sherlock Holmes films and novels as well as blockbusters like Shutter Island and Fight Club. I feel our feature would aim to be rated as a 15 to have large audience appeal and not limited our viewership. There is minimal violence meaning this rating would be acceptable.

4 This is Matthew Hamlet. He is 18 years old and lives in the Brighton residential areas. Dressing fairly standardly in jeans, t-shirts and shirt, nothing that stands out too much. He enjoys socialising with his friends online through video games and instant messaging services like Skype and spends time browsing media sites like Reddit and Twitter. He enjoys films like Se7en, The Usual Suspects, Twelve Monkeys, the new Batman Trilogy, Blade Runner, Inception, The Avengers and Kill Bill. He enjoys the cinema experience due to the high quality screens and surround sound, immersing him in the viewing but also enjoys owning the physical DVDs for use at any given time. He enjoys a large range of music such as indie-rock, alternative, dubstep/ hip-hop and the occasional pop song. He also regularly listens to BBC 6 music. We believe he is an example of an ideal audience member as is of an age where he can legally view any film, has an interest in alternative media, likes watching new films at the cinema and enjoys the Thriller genre. His interest in social media sites would also mean he’d be likely to come across viral marketing campaigns and discuss them with his peers. Example
