Mastheads and Taglines Mastheads and Taglines Possible Titles: Amanda Sinister Sunday One Way Labyrinth Silent killer The Midnight Massacre Possible Taglines: “It’s her turn” “This day isn’t so holy” “Trapped in an endless puzzle” “There is no escape” “You can run but you can’t hide” My ideas fit the horror convections because I think the taglines are intriguing and make the viewer think about what the film’s about and what might happen in it (making the audience want to watch the film). This creates an element of suspense and builds up tension. Also, the titles give the impression that they are suited for horror movies because, for example, in Silent Killer, the word ‘silent’ suggests to the viewer that the character is shady and mysterious (and is probably the antagonist), thus making the audience feel anxious about what they might do. In The Midnight Massacre, the word ‘massacre’ connotes death and danger as people are going to be killed. The use of ‘midnight’ makes the audience think that there is some sort of secrecy to the killer as they do it when it’s dark. This adds to the tension as the character doesn’t want people to know who they are.

Masthead Analysis The background image looks to be a large house. This gives us the impression that this will be the setting where most of the action takes place. Also, the bottom of the picture is dark and faded which implies that there is some sort of mystery to the house. Furthermore, as the bottom is dark and secretive, it could represent the emotions of the characters that live/or enter that house. The release date is ‘Friday The 13 th ’ which suggests something bad will happen during the film as that date is widely considered an unlucky day. They have also made the date stand out as it is in red and not white. Some of the letters in the masthead are red. This makes us think that someone will die or get seriously injured in the film as the colour red connotes danger and death. However, red also connotes love so there might be an element of romance in the film. Most of the letters in the masthead are white. In the whole title, the colour white overweighs the colour red. This could mean that, in the film, good defeats evil as white connotes purity. As white also represents innocence, it makes us think that the main character is innocent and the things they do are out of good intention. The font is bold which could represent what the characters, in the film, are like (i.e. courageous and brave).

Masthead Analysis The font here is red rather than white like the rest of the words. The only word that is red is the word ‘house’ which could imply that something bad will happen in it. This creates tension as the audience will want to know what will happen. Violence or death may take place inside of the house as the colour red represents danger. Red can also connote love so a big plot in the movie could be based around love and how much it means to some people which could lead to characters sacrificing themselves or others. The image shows a big house which seems to be abandoned as it is in the middle of nowhere. As the house is the only image in the poster, we get the impression that this is probably where a lot of the action will happen. The metallic, silvery colour suggests that the film may have some kind of supernatural or sci-fi. This is because the colour silver makes us think that the film will be mysterious. The colour used also looks like aliens or ET characters are linked in the film. The white lettering on the masthead suggests that there is some good in the film as white connotes purity and innocence. It could also represent that the last house is innocent however bad stuff still happen. There are more words in white than red which could mean that good defeats evil. However, as the word ‘house’ is bigger than the rest, it could mean that overall, more bad things happen. The red letters are splattered which represents blood. This also makes us think that there will be violence or death in the movie as red connotes danger. The font is bold and stands out which could show that the house is important.
