A ‘Plug’ for Electric Vehicles! Sally Herbert Sustainable Travel Officer Newcastle City Council

The Role of Newcastle City Council Help shape the growth in use of electric vehicles for the citizens and users in and around Newcastle Act as a demonstrator for electric vehicles/infrastructure Provide charging point infrastructure in and around Newcastle Develop expertise for installing and maintenance across the North East Preferred Supplier Status Lead Delivery Partner for Plugged in Places

Plugged in Places for the North East North East identified as one of the first plugged in places areas in phase 1 Commitment to install 580 charging points across the North East Over 60 partners within the project All 12 local authorities have secured funding to support the programme Traffic Signals act as lead delivery partner

Delivery within the Council Lead Officer: Sally Herbert, Sustainable Travel,  Co-ordinates low carbon vehicle activities across the Council  Oversees the programme of installations across Newcastle  Works in partnership with key stakeholders across the region  Supports the activities of Technical Services across the region Integrated Transport Unit Traffic Management Traffic Signals Strategic Housing, Planning and Transportation (Local Transport Plan Funding)

Traffic Signals Procure, survey, install and commission charging points across the North East Provide maintenance for charging points Commercial opportunities outside Plugged in Places

Traffic Management Work with to establish viable locations Initiate traffic regulation orders Order all relevant signage and works required

Integrated Transport Unit: Identify low carbon opportunities for fleet applications Review fleet operations across the council Procurement of electric vehicles

Infrastructure Pilot Pilot electric vehicle infrastructure technology Developing a workforce trained in installation and maintenance Establishing an electric vehicle charging infrastructure platform 1 of the charging points in use at the Civic Centre Charging point installation on Clayton Street

Going forward Continue to act as a demonstrator for electric vehicles and associated infrastructure In-house review of utilisation of electric vehicle applications Monitor uptake of charging point installations to help guide future investment Greater involvement in the development management operation Promote electric vehicle uptake through our travel planning activities
