In your study book: At the top of page 4: Italy Possible ideas to bring jobs/businesses to Southern Italy.

Do you know the Western European countries???

Italy’s mountains Notice the Apennines Mountains that run along Italy all the way down to the “toe” of the “boot.” Also notice the Alps in the northern part of Italy. Notice the Po River valley… where do you think most crops are grown???

Italy Today: Northern Italy Fertile soil, plenty of water, and good natural resources provide for a strong economy. Industries allow for great jobs. Railways, tunnels, and highways through the Alps make travel in the area easy. The economy of Northern Italy is strong b/c of good natural resources, fertile soil, large industries for jobs, and plenty of roads and tunnels.

Italy Today: Southern Italy Southern Italy is the poorer half of the country. The gov’t has offered incentives to help bring jobs to the area. (An incentive is something that leads people to follow a certain course of action). To encourage businesses in Southern Italy, the government has lowered taxes on businesses.

Italy Today: Notes Copy on your “Goals” Taxes = money collected by the government from people and businesses to pay for things everyone uses (roads, schools, police, etc.)
