3. Where was Rome? Rome grew from a city in central Italy to a huge empire that occupied parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia all at once. RomeItaly empire Rome began as a collections of small towns located on seven hills near the banks of the Tiber River, in the center of the Italian peninsula.peninsula The Roman Empire expanded as far north as modern-day Great Britain and Scotland.Roman EmpireGreat Britain The empire expanded as far southwest as the country of Morocco and as far east as the country of Syria.

5. Why Does It matter? The location of Rome led to the success of the city and its eventual expansion into an empire. Rome’s large size meant that it had a significant influence through its military, trade, and culture.

6. Location Leads to Expansion Rome’s location and geography gave it advantages that other locations did not have. The Tiber River provided reliable, fresh clean drinking water for humans and animals. Rome’s location on the Tiber River in central Italy meant that Roman traders could easily sail the Mediterranean Sea to trade with other places. For the most part, the mountains and hills of the Alps and Apennine Mountains of Italy, helped keep Romans safe from invasions. Rome’s warm climate, much like southern California, meant that it was a good location for farming, which meant that Romans had a plentiful food supply.climate – Grains, citrus fruits, grapes and olives.

7. Why Does It Matter? Rome’s geographic conditions helped it to develop a trade-based economy and made it easier for Rome to expand throughout the Mediterranean region. Rome’s location and climate made it an excellent location for growing grains and other crops.

Roman Roads and Coins Roman coins and roads helped make trade and travel much easier during the Roman Empire. – Spices, furs, silk, sugar, perfume, foods, etc. Roman soldiers and engineers built thousands of miles of roads and bridges that were used by soldiers, messengers, and traders throughout the empire. Romans had such advanced engineering technology that some of their roads still exist today. “All roads lead to Rome”! Romans minted coins that were used to make trade easier throughout the empire, and showed images of Rome’s culture - Roman rulers, gods, and goddesses.

9. Why Does It Matter? Accomplishments such as roads, bridges, and coins helped Romans develop trade networks that allowed them to prosper and helped to unify the empire. The development of roads made travel and trade throughout the empire easier. This helped Rome to expand its influence and empire.
