The Circulatory and Respiratory Systems Remember Cellular Respiration? Well here’s where the oxygen comes from…

The Respiratory System Consists of the nose and mouth, trachea, lungs (bronchi and alveoli). The diaphragm is the strong muscle that divides our chest and abdominal cavities and causes our lungs to expand.

Why? The purpose of the respiratory system is to bring in oxygen and to release wastes…especially carbon dioxide. Without it our cells wouldn’t get the oxygen they need to burn carbohydrates for energy. When you need more energy you breathe harder and faster to bring in more oxygen!

The Circulatory System Consists of the heart (pump) and the arteries, veins, and capillaries (blood vessels). Humans have a double looping circulatory system…that means one loop carries oxygenated blood to the body…the other loop carries deoxygenated blood to the lungs to get oxygenated after the oxygen has been used.

Why? The purpose of the circulatory system is the move the blood around the body: To take nutrients and oxygen to the cells To carry wastes away from the cells

The Vessels VEINS, venules, CAPILLARIES, arterioles, ARTERIES The veins carry blood to the heart. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Capillaries are the smallest blood vessels were oxygen is deposited and wastes such as carbon dioxide are picked up.

The Heart The heart is the pump that moves the blood around the body…one loop sends blood to the lungs…the other to the rest of the body. The human heart has FOUR chambers. The atria are the top two chambers…they receive blood and pump it to the ventricles. The ventricles are the bottom two chambers…they pump blood out of the heart.

The blood… Red blood cells – carry oxygen to the cells due to hemoglobin (an oxygen binding molecule) in their cytoplasm White blood cells – various types of white blood cells aid in fighting pathogens (they are part of our immune system) Platelets/Thrombocytes – aid in blood clotting

Relationships The circulatory system carries gases that are exchanged in the respiratory system. The endocrine and nervous systems can increase or decrease our heart rate and breathing if needed. White blood cells are part of the immune system… ALL of our organs need oxygen and nutrients (digestive system) carried by the blood.
