1 The Respiratory System

2 Learning goals We are learning the function and organs of the respiratory system. We are learning the function and organs of the circulatory system.

3 Respiratory function Gas exchange!!! O2 in CO2 out

4 nose mouth trachea lungs bronchi bronchioles alveoli diaphragm
Organs involved nose mouth trachea lungs bronchi bronchioles alveoli diaphragm

5 # Label 1 Nasal Cavity 2 Mouth (oral cavity) 3 Epiglottis 4 Trachea 5 Bronchi 6 Rib 7 Intercostal Muscle 8 Lungs 9 Diaphragm 10 Esophagus 11 Bronchioles 12 Capillaries 13 Alveoli

6 Gas Exchange Air enters the lungs through the bronchi which then branch to the bronchioles. Off of the bronchioles are several alveoli. The alveoli are covered in capillaries where the gas exchange happens. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into the capillaries and CO2 diffuses from the capillaries into the alveoli.

7 Gas Exchange Why is gas exchange needed? Cellular Respiration:
Cells require oxygen and release carbon dioxide as waste.

8 Breathing controlled by a muscle called the diaphragm. inhalation:
Diaphragm contracts & flattens Pressure in lungs is lower than outside Air flows in

9 Breathing exhalation:
Diaphragm relaxes and reverts back to a dome Pressure in lungs is higher than outside Air flow out. process is involuntary and controlled by a special part of the brain which detects CO2 levels in blood.
