PQP Poetry A Poem a Day!

PQP Simplified P- Praise…what do you like? Q- Questions…what didn’t you understand? P- Polish…what would you change?

Guidelines for PQP Attempt to use poetic language/terms when you praise or polish a poem. Think of the images created in your mind (imagery/descriptive language), figurative language or comparisons (metaphor/simile), structural components (stanzas, rhyme scheme, organization of poem), and connections to self, other texts or real-world.

Guidelines for Questioning Ask about word meanings Question the meanings of metaphors and similes Ask a question about the poet Question the author’s purpose or tone Question the use of words, phrases, descriptions Question the connection of the title to the poem

DoDon’t Use poetic terms… Figurative language… Descriptive language… Sensory language… Personal connections or stories…. TO DESCRIBE! Say, “I don’t know,” “nothing,” or “everything” to describe your feelings about a poem Use the same response for every poem Disengage! You will have assignments that accompany the poems Comment on the title each time
