VELO Module Mid-Term Review T. Bowcock 11 October, 2006

Themis Bowcock - MTR Overview Introduction Why? Terms of reference Timeline Project Summary

Themis Bowcock - MTR Introduction Why? Consolidate and review production STOP before we go too far Produce a revised baseline procedures Larger statistics from PRR Identify new problems (fix!) Public record Refereed (Tim Jones) Input of experience from other experiments

Themis Bowcock - MTR Introduction: Terms of reference Review documentation checklists, and idiot guides Review data to identify problems Compile list of issues that need to be addressed Identify priority items that must be addressed before production restarted Produce short written report to the Technical Board of LHCb

Themis Bowcock - MTR Introduction Timeline 11 th Oct: MTR at Liverpool – Full day 12 th Oct: Summary of MTR with CERN VELO management 16 th Oct: Written Report of MTR to TB … Restart production (if possible)

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Resources PPARC ( ) ~1.1MChf hardware including R&D 42 Si Modules and cables (no large number spares) Note PPARC not paying for FE Chips R&D ~250kChf or 50kCHf/yr to 2005 Limited ability to produce early prototypes and modules Liverpool/HEFCE and JIF Liverpool Semiconductor Detector Centre infrastrure Limited funding from Department ~50kChf

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Staff

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Oversight

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Management Gantt Has been replaced as we move into quasi DC operation Replaced by detailed time/worksheet optimized for throughput Areas of competance Weekly and Daily Meetings e-log (well used) Risk Register

Themis Bowcock - MTR Geometry (42 modules R&Phi) R sensors must be positioned within 20 um (gauss sigma) in X and Y of the nominal position relative to the base. R sensors must be positioned within 100 um (gauss sigma) in Z of the nominal position relative to the base. Phi sensors must fit within tolerances given by RF foil. The positioning has no further requirements, but the actual position must be known to an accuracy of about 10 um relative to the R sensor. Addition of constraint system See metrology discussion Project: Modules

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Module Specification Temperature The sensors operate at a nominal operational temperature of ~ -5° C.

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Module Specification Outgassing outgas_one_module < 1e-4 mbar liter / s after approx 4 hours in vacuum.

Themis Bowcock - MTR Project: Module Specification Electrical The module should be designed to sustain up to 600 V in < 1e-4mbar. Channels lost Sensors (20) Final module max 25/side

Themis Bowcock - MTR Summary Project approximately at mid-point Are we doing the right things? What more can we do to improve? Are we meeting our goals? Today…

Themis Bowcock - MTR Summary: Today Session I: QA & documentation Session II: Data Summaries Session III: Logistics,Infrastructure… Session IV: Discussion
