S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 1 Introduction Welcome to the 5 th GridPP Collaboration Meeting Steve Lloyd, Chair of GridPP Collaboration Board Today - Dissemination – All Hands Meeting Tomorrow – Tier-2 Plans Future – GridPP beyond 3 years Observations

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 2 Dissemination e-Science All Hands Meeting held at Sheffield, 2-4 September 2002 –~ 300 people in total –~ 19 GridPP People attended –~ 13 GridPP Abstracts accepted (total ~100) –~ 10 GridPP Posters displayed – 4 GridPP Invited talks – 3 GridPP Demonstrations

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 4 Dissemination Please send me: –News Items –Posters –Papers –Talks –Anything the publicises GridPP and your achievements. GridPP Web Page Requests

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 5 Tier-2 Centres GridPP Currently funds: –Tier-1/A Hardware and Support Staff –Middleware Staff –Applications Staff –CERN Hardware and Staff GridPP proposed should be ~4 Regional Tier-2s GridPP does not fund Tier-2s Potential Tier-2 hardware exists through JIF/JREI/SRIF etc Two recent surveys carried out: –January 2002 Grants Form G –July 2002 GridPP Tier-2 Questionnaire

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 6 Tier-2 Centres Many UK Institutes could be Tier-2s All major UK Institutes want to be (or be part of) Tier-2 centres. Four obvious geographical groupings: ScotGrid –Edinburgh, Glasgow Northern –Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield Southern –Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford, RAL-PPD London –Brunel, IC, QMUL, RHUL, UCL

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 7 Tier-2 Centres ScotGrid –Well established as prototype Tier-2 Northern –Have met once together, plan to meet again soon –Very significant resources Southern –Bristol, Oxford, RAL-PPD have submitted EoI to GridPP London –Informal discussions so far

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 8 Tier-2 Centre Resources Estimated resources at end of 2003 (from Institute returns) Number of CPUs Amount of Disk (TB) Amount of Tape (TB) London1252 76 8 Northern201511333 Southern 392 2920 ScotGrid 154 35 0 Number of CPUsAmount of Disk (TB) BaBar110829%7630% CDF45312%3915% D03208% 83% ATLAS94725%7228% CMS3048% 94% LHCb54314%4016%

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 9 Tier-2 Plans Encourage these Institutes to formally get together Establish some sort of MoU between GridPP and the Institutes Request an additional 2 FTE of effort from PPARC to be matched from elsewhere to fund 1 FTE at 4 Regional Centres for last year of GridPP Try and minimise System Management effort required to run the centres (see Rollout Plan)

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 10 The Future of GridPP GridPP is funded for 3 years from 1 Sept 2001 (1 Jan 2001 for EDG) i.e. ends by Oct 2004 End effects till end of 2004 LHC starts > 2006 Need to have built a robust, production Grid with sufficient capability and capacity by then

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 11 Future Priorities? Continue supporting Tier-1/A staff Continue ramp up of Tier-1/A hardware Support for Tier-2 staff Continued support for Applications development Continued support for Middleware development Ramp up of Tier-2 hardware Continued support of CERN staff Continued ramp up of CERN hardware

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 12 Future Requirements Need to estimate requirements for years 2004-2006 –Size of Tier-1/A and number of support staff –Size of Tier-2s and number of support staff –Staff required by experiments –Staff required for middleware Timely to produce a document now –SR2002 –EU Framework 6 Please give me your thoughts

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 13 Observations Project has been very successful in first year –Most posts filled –People actively producing –Leading Grid development in the UK –Convinced our partners, PPARC and UK e- Science community that we are delivering (must keep this up). Have not yet convinced the UK Particle Physics Community. This is vital for year 2.

S.L.LloydGridPP Collaboration Meeting IC 16-17 Sept 2002Slide 14 SWOT Analysis Strengths –Excellent people, sense of community, well resourced, well respected, integrated into EU development, significant role in US development, good website Weaknesses –Slow to get going, have not convinced the UK PP community yet, no industry involvement Opportunities –Further funding, potential for wide impact (talks, demos etc), sharing of resources by all experiments Threats –EDG software delays, UK PP community no longer support us
