 Students who think they might want to join NHS should start planning for it now  Students can apply for NHS in 10 th grade (second semester) They can also apply as juniors and seniors  They must have a 3.8 GPA, less than 2 Saturday classes, and all the required leadership and service points  For more information see the NHS website or contact Stacey Pate

 Cohort: Starting Freshman year + 4 years e.g. Freshman in 2008 – Cohort  Class rank is determined by the number of state credits: 0+ Freshman 6+ Sophomore 12+ Junior 18+ Senior

 Minimum Plan – 22 state credits (Requires Committee Approval)  Recommended Plan – 26 state credits  Distinguished Achievement Plan – 26 state credits and 4 advanced measures

 Students must complete all required coursework in order to participate in the graduation ceremony.

Dual Credit Students: Pick your transcript up from Kingwood Lonestar College personally.

 1 st Semester - Credits to be posted to 7 th transcript and calculated into GPA – grades must be in by Nov 11 th  2 nd Semester – Credits to be posted to Final Transcript and calculated into GPA – grades must be in by 5 th six weeks  See Course Guide/Counselor for specific details

 Must conference with the counselor to obtain an application- only courses beyond grad requirements may be taken Pass/Fail  Must submit the application with all appropriate signatures no later than one week after receiving the report for the 2 nd and 5 th marking period.  You cannot ask for the grade once this has been applied for and accepted  You will receive grades on progress reports and report cards for eligibility purposes  Will receive a P (Pass) or F (Fail) for the semester grade on transcripts

 Treat semesters like the end of the year  Semester average determines whether or not you pass the class and receive credit -.5 credit per semester class  Semester average is on your permanent record  This is the grade that the colleges, employers, etc. will see…  Semester Averaging – average of both semesters to determine final credit- (failing grade will still show on transcript)

1 st 6 weeks grade: 75 2 nd 6 weeks grade: 70 3 rd 6 weeks grade: 70 ( )/3 = 72 Average: 72 x.80 = 57.6 Semester Exam 55 x.20 = 11 Add together to get semester average = 68.6 Sem. Ave = 69 This would not be “bumped up” to a 70 – a 69 is an F.

 GPA - Grade Point Average (Example: 3.62) Shows personal performance 4.0 and 5.0 scale shown on transcript 5.0 scale reflects Honors classes Most important during fall semester of junior year!  Class Rank Shows comparison to other students based on GPA Difficult to change  Example: Graduating Class of 2011 – 425  Top 10% - 1 – 42 - Top 20% - 1 – 84

Seniors: October 19 – 22 (ELA, Math, Sci, Soc.St) Juniors:  English Language Arts – March 1, 2011  Math – April 27, 2011  Science – April 28, 2011  Social Studies – April 29, 2011

 May qualify for National Merit program – announced in September  Comprehensive feedback to student  Score Report – lists specific skills needing to improve  The cost of the test is $  The date of the test is Wednesday, October 13.  See Mrs. Grillet in 2009 to register.

 SAT and ACT- all parts required colleeges  SAT II’s required for some programs and elite schools  THEA- college readiness test  Exemptions include SAT, ACT, exit level TAKS  Upcoming dates:  SAT - Oct. 9/Nov. 6 ACT – Oct. 23/Dec – School Code

 SAT and ACT scores are sent through the testing agency, student indicates where to send scores  See SAT/ACT website for complete details

These are placement tests which may be used by Texas Community Colleges and Junior Colleges in lieu of SAT/ACT  COMPASS  ACCUPLACER  THEA  TAKS (English only)

 Generally recommended that students apply to 3 – 5 colleges.  Select a “dream” (reach) school that may be a stretch.  Select at least one ( safe) “sure thing”.  Select 2 – 3 schools in between.  A college should fit the student academically, personally, and socially. Be realistic! Ideally, have all applications completed by Thanksgiving

 Early Decision – A binding commitment to attend the college if you are accepted.  Early Action/Notification – Simply applying early so you will receive acceptance notification early – no commitment to attend.  Rolling Admission – Apply and usually receive an admission decision within four to six weeks
