Reading Workshop Start with Letters/sounds (in folder) Concepts of print (in folder) Snap Words Rhyming Reading/Retelling (in folder) Reader’s Workshop – Excellent program that reaches all levels of readers.

Readers Workshop pID= &bcpid= &bctid= pID= &bcpid= &bctid= Format Mini lesson-new strategy Active Involvement-try strategy on carpet Link-Have students try it independently at seats. Teachers confer with students, small group strategy lessons, and guided reading groups.

Writing Curriculum Begin by learning to tell/draw stories (Pictures) “Tell me what you drew a picture of.” or “What is happening here in this picture?” Start by labeling pictures with one letter and then two letters…….. Later, we begin to stretch out words/write all the sounds we hear. (Starting with one word, then two and so on.) Finally, we learn how to write sentences with spaces, spelling snap words correctly and using punctuation.

Handwriting Capitals – developmentally appropriate (4 basic strokes) in beginning of year. Lowercase – will be used most often but is difficult for them at this time. Parents can help by giving lots of fine motor skill practice! Rotations with hands on practice in several different types of media (shaving cream, salt, wood pieces, markers, pencils, ect.) Examples/directions (in folder) – modified the numbers to use a lot of the same language we have used with letters

Math Need to be able to read, create a set and write numbers 0-30 by the end of the year. Patterns AB, ABB, AAB, AABB (actions, words, and objects) Graphing and Comparing similarities and differences in objects. Calendar concepts, Shapes (triangle, rect., square, circle, cube, sphere) Sorting by color, shape, and size. Problem solving skills – let kids figure out problems at home. Lots of manipulative and centers – may not see a lot of paper and pencil coming home.

Science Alternate between science and SS (Themes) Integrate with literacy Hands-on Science Kits Learn about scientific process of predicting, observing, recording, and labeling Five senses and how we learn about the environment through our five senses Some other topics are animals, weather, seasons (it is generally the first thing mentioned in my newsletter)
