These three countries made up the Triple Alliance

What are Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy?

This country was allied with Russia. A terrorist organization called the Black Hand based in this country fired the first shot that started WWI.

What is Serbia?

These three countries made up the Triple Entente.

What are France, Great Britain and Russia?

Due to this status within the British Empire, Canada was automatically at war when Great Britain declared war on Germany.

What is a Dominion?

Germany made an ally with this empire to keep it from joining an alliance with Russia. At the end of WWI, the empire was disbanded. Part of the area is now the country of Turkey

Who is Archduke Franz Ferdinand?

This was Canada’s first major WWI battle. The Germans attacked using chlorine gas. Breathing through handkerchiefs soaked in their own urine to offset the gas effects, the Canadians defeated the Germans

What is the Second Battle of Ypres?

This 1917 battle is called “The Birth of a Nation.” Canadians captured their target in four days.

What is Vimy Ridge?

In this battle, No Man’s Land had many water-filled holes. Many soldiers drowned in the water-filled holes. Many historians considered this battle a waste of lives.

What is Passchendaele?

The was the opening fight at the Battle of the Somme. Newfoundland was not part of Canada at this time. Newfoundlanders fought as British citizens. Ordered to charge at machine guns, 725 of 800 Newfoundlanders were killed or wounded during the first hours of this fight.

What is Beaumont Hamel?

In 1918, Canadians troops led by General Arthur Currie smashed through the German defences in this LONG battle. Nearly one- quarter of the German army surrendered and the remaining German soldiers retreated to Germany.
