Precise Diction/ DJ’s for Chapters 4-6 Essay E.Q.: What is the format/outline for writing a compare/ contrast essay? Warm-up: Identify Prepositions (pgs , 1-10/ pg. 87, 1- 10) in grammar notebook) Activity: SB pgs , 27-2, /1/12 T.I.: no teacher input today 3132

Chapters 4-9/ Dialectical Journal Discussion E.Q.: What are the procedures for Dialectical Journal Discussions? Warm-up: (in Grammar notebook) -define nouns and pronouns -pg compound/common/proper/concrete/a bstract noun -pg.31 pronouns and personal pronouns -define and copy chart Activity: take notes in your groups while sharing Dialectical Journal entries T.I.: Procedures for Dialectical Journal Discussions Discussion must go along with the pages assigned. Example Chapters 7,8,9 – The person in the group, who has quoted a passage from pg 50 and has a response, goes first in the group. Everyone finds that quote in the book, while that person reads it and then gives his/her response. After that person goes, the others in the group, verbally, add to that person’s response. The others take notes and write responses under “Activity”. You continue discussing passages within the group until all the pages have been covered, in order, and everyone has discussed his/her passages. Finally, the group chooses the two best passages and responses discussed within the group, and writes them down on an Index card (provided by me). 10/2/

Babies/Birthdays/Characterization/Circle of Life/Essential Attributes E.Q.: What organizational structure should I use in writing a compare/ contrast essay? Warm-up: Grammar book pgs Pre-assessment Exercises A & B pgs Exercise 1 pgs Exercise 3 Activity: SB pgs T.I.: Sample In The Giver, Jonas’s society celebrates birthdays much differently than our society does. For example, in Jonas's society every member celebrates his or her birthday on the same day in December. Jonas reflects, “He could remember the Decembers back to when he had become, well probably a Four” (11). However, in our society, every person celebrates his/her own birthday on the date of his/her birth. Also, in Jonas’s society, the ceremonies are celebrated for children only until they reach twelve years of age. As Jonas’s mother states, “After Twelve, age isn’t important” (17). In contrast, people in our society celebrates their birthdays, or at least keep track of their age, until they pass away. 10/3/12-10/5/
