Revising SCAN

Revising - Day 1 Teaching Point: To improve their work, writers pay close attention to the revision process. Active Engagement: Using a persuasive or argument essay we will learn a new strategy for revising. This is one of many ways you can revise. Let’s look at SCAN. Independent Practice - Write a journal entry that describes your revision process when writing. What steps do you normally take when revising? Need copies of Six Steps Cards with Prompts, Scan Checklist,

SCAN S- Does it make SENSE? C - Is it CONNECTED to my belief (thesis)?
When revising papers before and after evaluation and feedback you should keep SCAN in mind. S- Does it make SENSE? C - Is it CONNECTED to my belief (thesis)? A - Can I ADD more? N - NOTE errors

Revising - Day 2 Teaching Point: To identify focus areas when revising, writers can use feedback from others. Active Engagement: Take out your Checklist and Six Steps. We will look at an example student essay with teacher comments. How can we use SCAN with the feedback provided to revise this essay? Need essay example printed with comments (in google Drive folder) checklists and Six Steps Cars with prompts. Active Engagement suggested script below: #1 Open the example essay and say “What is it I have to do? I have to revise this essay. I will use my six steps checklist to help me revise my essay. Okay, the first thing I need to do is read the essay.” Point to the first step. Read the essay out loud to the students, direct students to jot down notes in their journal about likes, changes, additions, questions they encounter as you are reading. #2 Say “That’s pretty good but I can make it better. The second thing I need to do is look at the sentence that states what I believe.” Point to the step and then locate the sentence and underline it. “Will other people know what I believe? Is it clear?” Read the sentence out loud. If is is clear , say so and move on to the next step. If not, point out how it can be made clearer. Cross out the old sentence and write a new one. #3 “Now the third thing I need to do is make sure I have at least two reasons with evidence as to why I believe what I do.” Point to this step. “If I add more reasons that will make my essay stronger. What are some more reasons to support my belief?” Give reasons that you noted during Step 1 while you were reading the essay out loud. Write them down saying them out loud. Before writing, make comments out loud about where you will put the reason (I think ti will go best here...That looks good and makes my essay stronger...Okay, I need to add another strong reason.) Propose other reasons, reject it, propose another - verbally brainstorm. #4 “Now I am ready for Step 4.” Point to step 4. “When I do Step 4, I will SCAN.” Pull out the SCAN cue cards. “I will look at this first sentence in my paper and ask myself it is clear. Is it connected? Should I add more?” Model and point to the steps on the steps cards. I will now make my changes on the paper copy and note any errors.” Model how to look for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling errors. Involve the students in the process whenever possible. These changes are step 5. #5 “Now that I have done 4 - I need to look at step 5.” Point to step 5 on the steps card. “ all of the changes I did on my paper really are step 5.” “Now that I have completed Step 5, I need to do Step 6. I will reread my entire essay and make any final changes. This will make my essay more polished.” Model the procedures for making changes and additions. Involve the students in the process by asking what they marked as changes in their notebooks. Review the six steps, next time they will be using this strategy.

Revising - Day 3 Teaching point - Writers utilize revision strategies such as SCAN when revising and editing the work of others. Independent Practice: With a partner, use the SCAN strategies to revise a sample piece of writing. Say “Today, we will memorize the Six Steps for Revising and SCAN. If you know the steps well you will be able to tell yourself what to do when you are revising an essay.” “To help you memorize the six steps, we will do an exercise called rapid fire. We will take turns saying the steps. This is called rapid fire because you are trying to name the steps as rapidly as you can. You may look at the cue cards if you need to, but don’t rely on them too much because I will put the cards away after several rounds of rapid fire.” Allow students to paraphrase the steps, but ensure that the intended meaning is maintained. Review what the students have missed and allow them to retest until they get it right. This is a mastery grade.

Revising Day 4 Teaching Point: Writers revise previously written work using the Six Steps and SCAN strategies. Independent Practice: Remember to revise for content BEFORE mechanics. Do you have a strong thesis? Are your topic sentences connected to your thesis? Do you EXPLAIN the significance of your evidence? Once you have gone through the process for content, then and only then should you edit for mechanical errors (spelling, punctuation, grammar, MLA format, etc).

Revising - Day 5 Teaching Point: Writers give and receive descriptive, focused feedback. Active Engagement: We are going to watch a video called “Austin’s Butterfly”. As you watch, think about how you might apply some of these strategies when you are peer editing today. Independent Practice: Trade papers with your elbow partner. Using SCAN, edit and revise your peer’s essay. Journal Prompt: What is the overall message of this video? How can this message translate to writing? How does it relate to attitude/mindset? Give examples; be specific.

Revising - Day 6 Teaching Point: Writers publish their revisions to show improvement in their writing skills. Active Engagement: What revisions did you make over the last two days? Did the SCAN strategies help focus your revisions? Independent Practice: Log in to your Google Classroom account and insert your revisions in your original essay. When you are finished, submit your revised essay.
