DIZZY’S CHILDHOOD Dizzy Gillespie was born in Cheraw, South Carolina in ‘Dizzy’ was his nickname his government name was John Birks Gillespie. Dizzy had a huge love for jazz. He soon will be one of the most famous jazz musicians of all time. Gillespie was a trumpet virtuoso and improviser. His mother and father names were Lottie Gillespie and James Gillespie. Dizzy was the only child. Dizzy’s trumpet was different from the modern day trumpet. He attended Benjamin Franklin High School in New York City. Dizzy started playing the trumpet at a young age. He was about 10 years old.
