2 Life of "Pops" Armstrong Nicknamed "Satchmo" or "Pops" Armstrong
One of the greatest Jazz musicians of the mid-1900s Born August 4th, 1901 in New Orleans Grew up in "The Battlefield" - a neighborhood known for its violence Married "Lil Hardin" a pianist in 1918

3 Childhood Grew up w/Grandmother
Helped earn money by picking up trash and do tasks for the Karnofsky family Loved to listen to music from dance-halls  - it was his inspiration Played the cornet w/his mentor Joe "King" Oliver Divorced with his wife shortly after marriage Childhood

4 Moving into the City Went to Chicago in 1922 to perform with Joe Oliver's Creole band Joined Fletcher Henderson's band in New York in 1924 Moved back to Chicago in 1926 and started his own band called the "Hot Five" Armstrong captured audiences with his solos

5 The Hot Five Louis became a great jazz soloist in his band
In 1935 Louis Russell's band served as Armstrong's band instead During this time period, he abandoned the old blues and instead practiced a simplified version of 

6 Louis Armstrong had his own unique style that was influenced by the Blues
Armstrong used his voice like an instrument and sung without lyrics  He sang the chorus in nonsense syllables and improvised This became known as "scat-singing" Louis Armstrong caused scat-singing to grow in popularity Armstrong's New Style

7 Armstrong's Influence on Jazz
Most influential singer of the 20th century Inspired the world to love Jazz and was one of the biggest reasons for its huge world-wide popularity in the mid 1900s Toured the world with other all-star Jazz musicians to spread Jazz Led to Jazz's development as a fine art
