2 History Many musicians were drafted during World War 2 Restrictions were put on gasoline so travel was harder for people Dixieland became popular between 1917-1923 It includes ragtime, blues, marches, and pop

3 History Continued 1 st dixieland group used coronet, clarinet, and trombone Rhythm sections includes the banjo, tuba, and the drums First played jazz was in the 1800’s Almost all jazz was played in the street

4 History continued continued Between 1910 and 1920 jazz spread to the south In the 1940’s and the 1950’s jazz became more popular

5 Musicians Louie Armstrong (trumpet and singer) Miles Davis (trumpet) John Coltrane (saxophone) Charlie Parker (saxophone) Billie Holiday (singer)

6 Louie Armstrong Started working at the age of seven Born in 1901 at New Orleans and died in 1971 Abandoned his mother soon after he was born Ditched school in third grade Led a vocal quartet along the streets to earn money

7 Louie Armstrong Cont. In 1913 the police took him to a home for troubled boys He was released from the home at 13 Got tutored by Joe King Oliver, a coronet player In 1922 he joined a pro band In 1996 he made his first recording

8 Miles Davis Was born in 1926 Died in 1991 Was a jazz trumpeter Became a band leader Played the song “Birth of the Cool” in 1949

9 Miles Davis Cont. Played the song “Kind of Blue” in 1959 Played the song “Porgy and Bess” in 1958 Played the song “Sketches and Spain” in 1960

10 John Coltrane Was a saxophonist Grew up in High Point North Carolina Played E flat alto horn and clarinet there At the age of fifteen he learned to play the alto sax

11 Charlie Parker He was born in 1920 and died in 1955 Spent his childhood in Kansas City, Missouri His dad worked on the railroad His mom worked 2 or 3 jobs at a time When he was 12 he struggled to play the Alto- Saxophone He became a Saxophonist

12 Billie Holiday Was born in 1915 and died in 1959 Her father was a banjo and guitar player Went to jail Tried to be a dancer in the Harlem Nightclub but FAILED Relatives abused and neglected her
