WARM UP Copy the ENTIRE Question with Answers and Circle your answer A student conducted an original, well- designed experiment carefully following the proper scientific procedure. In order for the student’s conclusions to be considered valid, the experiment should a. contain several independent variables b. support the original hypothesis c. be repeated to verify the results d. be conducted by a professional scientist

ANSWER C. be repeated to verify the results Why are the others wrong? More independent variables the better but not necessary to make an students conclusions valid Never does an experiment have to support the hypothesis or else we wouldn’t have to do the experiment!! You do not have to be a scientist to conduct experiments! YOU do it everyday

TODAYS AGENDA Class Business How many water drops can I fit on a penny?

Class Business Outline 2-1 Due on Thursday  Reading Guide is on the Web Active Listening Part 2: Due Monday  Keep someone talking for 20 minutes. Just listen. Ask questions. Write what you experienced. Active Listening!!!!!! Quiz on Thursday Outline 2-2 next Tues, 2-3 next Friday  Reading Guides will be on the web this week

Essential Question Lets do an experiment!

How many drops of water on a penny? Question: How many drops of water can fit on a penny before it runs off the edge? Write your hypothesis while I pass out the materials What properties of water might have an effect? Groups of 2. Maybe three. One water bottle per table

Procedures Part I Pick one of the pennies Must repeat each test three times and take the average number of drops

Procedures Part II Design your own variables Each variable is a diff. coin E.g.  Use a dime instead of a penny  The penny is worn out.  Use the heads/tails side of a penny

Conclusion Compare the results of your three variables to your original test. Why did you see the results you did? Is there any chance of error?

HOMEWORK Outline 2-1  Due on Thursday Active Listening Part 2  Due on Monday Week 4 Outline 2-2  Due on Tuesday Week 4 Outline 2-3  Due on Friday Week 4
