STANDARDS  VAHSVAPR.1 Uses formal qualities of art (elements and principles) to create unified composition and communicate meaning.  VAHSVAPR.5 Creates artwork reflecting a range of concepts, ideas, and subject matter.

Learning Task  Students will create a collage artwork combining spray paint and photographs. They will use their knowledge of elements and principles of design to create a unique artwork. Students may write about the completed image to explain why they chose the image, and how it reflects the painted surface.

Steps:  Students will experiment with the techniques of spray painting. (Paint outside or in a well ventilated area)  They will use various objects (lids, leaves, stencil cut outs, newspaper, etc) to assist in the design patterns.

Steps:  Students will pick an image and create multiples of the image. They may vary in size, color, or the paper they are printed on. They may be one image with individual parts enlarged or multiple images mixed together.  Students will paint their backgrounds with the spray paint.  Students will cut out their images and attach them to the board with gel medium.  It is best to put the gel medium under the image and on top of the image. If you paint across the whole painting with the gel medium you will create a shiny surface and the brush strokes will show.  Sharpies, colored pencils, or other materials can be used to enhance the details of the image.
