Chapter 4 Mental and Emotional Problems

 A disorder is a disturbance in the normal function of a part of the body  Mental and emotional disorders are real physical problems  Treatment can include medication, counseling, or both Lesson 1 Mental and Emotional Disorders

 Everyone feels anxious at one time or another  Anxiety Disorders is a disorder in which intense anxiety or fear keeps a person from functioning normally  Phobia or an exaggerated fear of a specific situation or object  Anxiety disorders may first become apparent during the teen years or young adulthood Anxiety Disorders

 Generalized Anxiety Disorder- restlessness, tiredness, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, sleep disturbances  Panic Disorders- Pounding heart, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, nausea, fear of losing control  Phobia- An intense or exaggerated fear of specific situation or object  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder- A need to perform behaviors over and over again, such as hand washing, counting, hoarding, or arranging possessions  Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder- Withdrawal or depression after a distressing experience such as sexual abuse, a natural disaster, an accident, or witnessing violence.  Acrophobia- fear of heights  Agoraphobia- Fear or crowded places or open areas  Astraphobia- Fear of thunder and lighting  Claustrophobia- Fear of enclosed spaces  Ecophobia- Fear of home  Glossophoba- Fear of public speaking  Hydrophobia- Fear of water  Kenophobia- Fear of empty spaces  Noctiphobia- Fear of night  Socialphobia- Fear of people  Zoophobia- Fear of animals Common Phobias

 PD’s- is a psychological condition that affects a person’s ability to interact normally with others  Passive-Aggressive personality disorder- hard time cooperating with others  Borderline personality disorder- have trouble in close relationship with others  They tend to idealize that person  They might lash out in anger towards the people that they love Personality Disorders

 Mood Disorder- This is a disorder in which a person undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extreme  Bipolar disorder- “cycles”  Alternating highs and lows  Something that might develop is depression  This is a very serious mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything Mood Disorders

 Warning Signs  Irritability, anger, or anxiety  Lack of energy  Significant change in sleep patterns  Inability to concentrate  Putting blame on other people for their problems  Feelings of worthlessness or guilt  Pessimism  Thought of death or suicide Depression Among Teens

 Is a serve mental disorder in which people lose contact with reality  They might have hallucinations  See or hear things that are not actually there  Withdrawal from others and social health  Medication is available for treatment Schizophrenia

 Suicide is the intention taking of one’s own life  During teen years, you will begin to accept new responsibilities and challenges within your family  Serious and dangerous topic Lesson 2 SUICIDE PEVENTION

 “I can’t take it anymore”  “No one cares if I live or die”  Do not take these comments lightly  Talk to a trusted adult Warning Signs

 A sudden fascination with the topic of death  Dramatic changes in the person’s appearance  Self-Destructive behavior  Withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities  A sudden change in mood Warning Signs

 Usually a plea for help  You can provide help and support  Talk to them  Be supportive  Always report it Providing Support

 Depression can feel like a heavy weight  Sometimes, people feel that they cannot get out from under it Dealing with Depression

 Suicide is never a solution to depression. Solutions do exist for every problem, but suicide is not one of them  Feelings of depression do not go on forever. Spend time with family and friends. This is a healthy defense mechanism that can help get you through a difficult time  You are not alone. There are people who love and want to help you Remember

 What to do if you need help?  It is not always easy to determine whether a mental health problem is serious  There are certain symptoms  If you have been feeling sad or angry for two weeks or longer it is likely an indicator of a problem that will not disappear on its own  Other indicators are feeling ‘out of control’ Lesson 3 Help for Mental and Emotional Disorders

 Help for mental and emotional problems almost always includes some form of counseling  Therapy is an approach that teaches you different ways of thinking or behaving  Therapy gets to the root of your emotional and mental problems and helps you work to find a solution Kinds of Help

 Different settings for therapy are available  Depending on the problem and the person’s needs  Individual therapy- entering therapy for the first time, freely talk about different problems  Group therapy- several people at once, all have the same or similar problems  Family therapy- counseling that seeks to improve troubled family relationships Therapy Setting

 Effective new medicines for treating emotional disorders have been produced  Many of these work to correct chemical imbalances  It is important to know that these medicines are not meant for everyone  These are not replacements for therapy  They do not treat every mental and emotional problems Drug Treatment Therapy

 Different types of mental and health professionals provides therapy  Emotional problems you will see a psychologist Mental health professional which is trained and licensed by the state to perform therapy (child psych)  A clinical social worker- is a licensed, certified mental health professional with a master’s degree in social work. (often in schools)  Psychiatrist- is a medical doctor with a specialty in the treatment of mental health problems (Can prescribe medication) Mental Health Providers
