For young people, suicide is the third leading cause of death More people die of suicide than murder For every 24 attempts, there is only 1 completed suicide

8 SUICIDE Having depression (15% of severely depressed people die of suicide) Being male (4x as many men die of suicide than women, but women are 3x as likely to attempt suicide) Using drugs (73% of suicides involve drugs) Being an adult (most suicides are adults) Exposure to suicidal behavior in others (even in fiction)

9 POSSIBLE CAUSES OF DEPRESSION
A family breakup A death in the family Alcoholism or other drug dependencies within the family Witnessing domestic violence or being a victim of physical or sexual abuse

10 POSSIBLE CAUSES OF DEPRESSION
Inability to handle pressure of at school or at home Unsupportive family Feelings of being disconnected from or rejected by peers

11 WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE
Sharing suicide plans openly. Dropping hints through words and actions. A sudden fascination with the topic of death. Dramatic changes in the person’s appearance.

12 WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE
Self-destructive behavior. Withdrawal from friends, family, and regular activities. A sudden change in mood.

13 DEALING WITH DEPRESSION
SUICIDE IS NOT THE ANSWER FEELINGS OF DEPRESSION DO NOT GO ON FOREVER YOU ARE NOT ALONE

14 SUPPORT Talk to the person. Show an interest in the person’s problem.
Do not be afraid to ask whether the individual is planning to harm him or her self. Urge the person to share his or her feelings and thoughts with a trusted adult. Never promise to keep suicide plans a secret.
