3 WHAT ARE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS? Mental and emotional disorders: illnesses that affect a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Most mental disorders are characterized by abnormal thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that make people uncomfortable with themselves or at odds with others. Abnormal = describes behaviors, feelings, or thoughts that are highly unusual and inappropriate in a given situation. (Example: Linda washes her hands 100 times a day)

4 CAUSES OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS Physical factors: Drug use Diseases Accidental injuries to the brain Heredity Other mental and emotional disorders do not have physical causes. Some may come from repeated emotional stressors If mental and emotional disorders are identified early, they can be treated so that they don’t become lifelong problems.

5 TYPES OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS Anxiety Disorders: extreme fears of real or imaginary situations that get in the way of normal activities. Panic Disorder - People experience intense feelings of fear for a short time…sometimes, for no reason. - During a panic attack, the body prepares for fight or flight, even during ordinary situations (waiting in line) Phobias - An exaggerated or unrealistic fear of something specific (tight spaces, spiders, public places)

6 TYPES OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) - have unwanted thoughts that may not make sense - A person with OCD may feel that he or she must perform a certain activity several times (washing hands) - Doing these activities can make the anxiety go away for a short while, but it quickly returns Post-Traumatic stress disorder - A reaction to a traumatic event (war, natural disaster) - Bad or negative memories of the event remain for a long period of time

7 TYPES OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL DISORDERS Mood Disorder: a mental and emotional problem in which a person undergoes mood swings that seem extreme, inappropriate, or last a long time. Depression -A person feels a strong sense of hopelessness, helplessness, worthlessness, guilt, and extreme sadness. -These feelings can continue for weeks -A person who is depressed may lose interest in activities that used to be fun -If a person who is depressed begins to feel hopeless, they may consider ending their lives Bipolar Disorder -Extreme mood swings for no apparent reason. -A person with bipolar disorder usually experiences alternating periods of excessive activity, called mania, and then depression. -During times of mania, the person has an unrealistic belief in his or her abilities, leading to poor judgement and even dangerous risk taking.

8 SIGNS OF MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS Loss of appetite Failing to take care of their personal appearance Some may have nightmares or have problems falling asleep Hearing voices that no one else can hear Thinking that others are trying to harm them Long-lasting feelings of sadness

9 WARNING SIGNS OF SUICIDE Signs of Suicide Wanting to be left alone Talking about Suicide Saying final good-byes to friends and loved ones Giving away possessions Engaging in risky behavior such as drug use or reckless driving Interest in death or violence Suicide: the act of killing oneself on purpose.
