Energy long ago 1950s Heating in the home People would have heated their homes with coal and turf. This is a turf fire. Turf comes from bogs

Energy long ago 1960s-1970s Central heating Tanks filled with water were installed at the back of the fire and when the fire was on it would heat up the water. This was pumped around the house to heat radiators But turf and coal was still in use Electric fire would also heat up homes

Energy long ago 1980s As people got wealthier they move on to oil and gas central heating In Ireland gas was discovered off the coast in the sea and was used to heat homes, schools and buildings

Energy long ago The government banned the use of coal in the main cities because when there was low air pressure the smoke mixed with fog to make smog. This was bad for peoples lungs. People could only use smokeless coal.

Energy long ago 1990s Oil and gas heating was most popular Coal fires was less common Homes were insulated

Energy long ago 2000s Homes were insulated Double glazing in most building Wood burning stoves were use Geo thermal and under floor heating

Energy long ago Wind turbines were built to produce wind generated electricity. This way of making electricity does not produce pollution

2000 Solar panels were introduced and people started to install them on their roofs to generate electricity

Energy use in Ireland Energy use in Ireland per capita has increased since 1960 The peak was in 2001 In that year it was kg in kg of oil equivalent per person In 2007 it fell back to kg in oil equivalent Click to see Graph
