Btec level 2 Construction UNIT 3 Sustainable Construction-energy use

Insulation, etc will not be enough 1. Improving the energy efficiency of older houses will not be enough to achieve the Government’s national carbon targets. 2. Microgeneration, as well as more efficient distribution of energy will be needed also.

Energy Sources-2 types Non-renewable energy - energy obtained from static stores of energy that remain bound unless released by human interaction, e.g., nuclear fuels, fossil fuels - oil, coal, natural gas. Renewable energy - energy obtained from the continuing or repetitive currents of energy occurring in the natural environment, e.g., solar, wind, tidal, biomass, geothermal.

Plans for the future Renewables Large scale wind Microgeneration Small scale wind Photovoltaics Nuclear 2008 White Paper on Nuclear Power: nuclear power is low carbon, affordable, dependable, safe and capable of increasing diversity of energy supply Clean coal (CCS) Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) – has the potential to reduce emissions from fossil fuel power stations by up to 90%

Energy use in the home

Change in energy use

Low/Zero Carbon Technology

Renewable electricity Solar PV Panels-Wind turbines

Renewable heat sources Ground source heat pumps Air source heat pumps

More renewable heat sources Biomass Sunlight through windows

Combined heat and power

ENERGY CONSERVATION in HOMES What are the options to reduce use of energy?

Electricity use Which way the house faces Solar tubes which transfer daylight into dark areas Low energy appliances-fridges, washing machines, lights etc Window design for cooling to reduce need for fans/ air-conditioning

HEAT LOSS INSULATION- for floors, roofs, walls, windows (double/triple glazing) Draught-proofing/ heat recovery systems Thermal mass-e.g. semi-underground houses

LZC=Low or Zero Carbon tech Examples Such technologies include: renewable electricity generation from solar photovoltaics or small wind turbines; renewable heat from solar water heating, wood burners and other biomass boilers; and low carbon technologies such as heat pumps and combined heat and power (CHP) generators. District or community heating schemes are one way in which CHP can be used to deliver energy efficiently, and with reduced emissions if using biomass as a fuel.
