Green vs. Green By: Carla Torres, Yaquelin Cervantes

Lighting and Light Bulbs   Is a regular light bulb better then CFL?   If you have an efficient electricity then you can use a regular light bulb   But if you have no green electricity you can use a CFl bulb   We can use lighting in an efficient way at home or New Tech in different ways.

How energy is produced?  Gay-Lussac Law is a good example of how energy is produced.  T P coal Flames water steam Increasing the pressure makes the Turbine move Then this makes electricity

Sources of How Energy is Produced  Electricity is produced by using steam turbines  Fossil fuels like: Natural gas Natural gas Petroleum Petroleum  Nuclear Power  Renewable Energy sources  Biomass  Wind power  Geothermal  Solar Power These 2 are the ones that we are concerned with (climate change)

SMUD vs. PG&E  SMUD uses a better green resources to produce energy  Less green house gases  PG&E use less green resources to produce energy  More green house gases  Choose a regular bulb  Choose a better CFL bulb

SMUD  Have a strategy on directive environment protection.  6 principal SMUD pledge to do, for example:  1. develop greenhouse gases reduction plan  2. find and gather all available cost effective, reliable and feasible energy efficientcy

Some alternatives SMUD Use  Solar  SMUD’s owns wind turbines near Rio Vista  3 wind turbines that are 5 megawatts  Winds turbines have low cost power  Use clean and renewable fuel  Produce SMUD’s lowest cost electricity under 5 cents per kwh.  Which can save money and global warming.

 Use renewable generation R&D Solar thermal Solar thermal Central PV Central PV Biomass gasification Biomass gasification  Solar Energy: SMUD has a program that makes solar power available to any customer, and offers affordable options to buy solar power  Which you can install in your home or building, and it lowers your use of fossil fuels while lowering electric bill

PG&E  Is active member of Clean Energy Group of environmentally progressive electric companies,  Try to advance environmental policies that are economically and environmentally friendly  Group’s goal is to reduce emissions from power plants, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, mercury, and carbon dioxide

Climate Change  There is three main problems that we are concern of climate change  Acid Rain  Ozone  Smog

Acid Rain Damaged lakes, stream, forest, plants, and animals even buildings. Damaged lakes, stream, forest, plants, and animals even buildings. is cause by emissions of compounds of ammonium, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur. is cause by emissions of compounds of ammonium, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur. this acid rain comes in a form of fog, snow, sleet or rain with a pH lower than 5.6. this acid rain comes in a form of fog, snow, sleet or rain with a pH lower than 5.6. pollution pollution

Ozone  Ozone is a gas that is located in the Earth’s atmosphere and the ground level.  Composed of 3 oxygen atoms  Is not directly into air  In the ground level is created by chemical reaction with Nitrogen, volatile organic compounds, and sunlight 2 O 3 → 3 O 2

Smog  Is an air pollution  Is a result of burning fusils fuels which is to make electricity  Factories and cars smog  A mix of sulfur dioxide

What to do to help the environment?  If burning coal produces nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon dioxide for making electricity energy, then acid rain is caused.  Using or replacing efficient products that use less energy, would help reduce burning coal, and that would help reduce nitrogen, sulfur, and carbon dioxide.  This help to have less acid rain, smog, and ozone.

Policy Analysis  If New Tech uses 75% of electricity energy during the school day which is 6am-5pm  Turn off the power of the lights when classrooms aren’t need it (1%).  The use of lighting is important to save money or have less global warming.  Also have the action of letting the light off or on is on you.  If you don’t need light don’t use it.

Continue…  Use the air conditioner less and only when is need it (5%).  Computers are replace to an efficient computers, it would save 15% of what is normal use.  School continue unplugging the electronics that aren’t use  Shutting off everything when school ends it will save 49% of energy.

Charles's Law  V T  High pressure in the atmosphere is bad  Lead to poor air quality  Have bad levels of smog  CO 2 traps heat  If CO 2 traps to much heat, it increase the overall temperature of the planet.
