Hour 1: Introduction and Discussion

Introduction: Welcome to the Cell Phones as Educational Learning Tools Workshop! In this workshop you will create your own lesson with the cell phone as the focus

Resources: For this workshop you will be using two main resources: This PowerPoint and The wikispace Please keep both open for easy access

Topic: The Cell Phone: The Next Educational Innovation Population: This Multimedia workshop is designed for educators who are interested in taking the cell phone from distraction to educational learning tool. Outcomes: By the end of this course students will be able to: 1. Use the cell phone in an educational setting. 2. Design assignments and assessments through the use of a cell phone. 3. Use existing technology in conjunction with the use of cell phones.

Agenda Hour 1: Pre-training Cell Phones: The Next Educational Innovation Video Cell phone distraction and fear conversation Hour 2: Resources and Brainstorming Presentation of possible uses for cell phones in the classroom Team brainstorming activity Hour 3: Creation Begin creation of authentic assessment Hour 4: Creation Continue Creation of authentic assessment Hour 5: Sharing Group/team sharing of assessment

Pre-Training Before we can begin creating cell phone based lessons. We first must understand the history of cell phones in the classroom. Please watch the following video so that we can begin to wrap our brains around the task at hand.

Cell Phones: The Next Educational Innovation This video was created by myself to show the evolution of cell phones in the educational setting and the difference in opinions that comes with their use, and how cell phones can and will be the next educational innovation. This video can be permanently found at Please feel free to use and share the video as you see fit!

Video Graphic Organizer Please use the following graphic organizer to follow along with the pre-training video or to use as a summary of the video. This graphic organizer is available for your use at

At this point please return to the Multimedia Workshop Wikispace and click on the tab Hour 1 Activity

Hour 2: Incorporating Cell Phones into the Classroom

Ways to Incorporate Cell Phones into your classroom In this section of the workshop I will introduce two possible resources for you to use with cell phones in your classrooms: –Yodio.com –Polleverywhere.com

Resource Tutorials: Please watch the Yodio.com and the Polleverywhere.com tutorial videos located on the workshop wikispace under the tab Hour 2 Activities. After you have watched the tutorials come back to this PowerPoint for your next steps.

Team Brainstorming Session In your grade teams that you created based on the Hour 1 Discussion please brainstorm a list of at least five possibilities for both Yodio.com and Polleverywhere.com. Make sure that the ideas that your team brainstorms could actually be used in your classroom because we will come back to them in Hour 3! You may choose to use the brainstorming template found here or under the Hour 2 tab. Brainstorming Template.doc Brainstorming Template.doc

Ideas for Brainstorming If you are struggling with coming up with ideas please visit the following website for great ideas on how to incorporate cell phones into your classroom! Also feel free to join this wiki and add your ides to the idea bank!

Hour 3: Individual Creation of Authentic Assessment

Creating a Cell Phone Friendly Lesson The next two hours of this multimedia workshop have been designed to let you begin creating two cell phone friendly lessons with both Yodio.com and Polleverywhere.com. Use your time to create your lessons while you still have my guided help. If you experience any difficulties or have any questions please skype me at kkhetzel. I will be online and I will be answering any and all questions in the order that I receive them. HAPPY CREATING!

Hour 5: Sharing Your Creations

Sharing Your Creations On your team pages that you have created on the workshop please share and upload your creations so we can all see how you have used Yodio.com and Polleverywhere.com in your classrooms. This is often the most helpful part of the workshop because this is when we are able to collaborate and share what you have created. You never know, what you created may fit into someone else’s classroom too!

Workshop Evaluation In the Hour 5 tab under the discussion area please fill out the workshop evaluation.

Thank you for attending this multimedia workshop! Kassidy Hetzel
