Information provision Year 1 students can be overwhelmed by amount available –Chunk it up! –Introduce them to what they need Aimed at course work –Course texts –Heavy Demand –3 day loan items

Services Heavy demand – can book ahead Long opening hours (but not 24/7) QML bookable and non-bookable PCs (but never enough!) Laptop borrowing Study space

Support Helpful staff Instructional sessions –threaded with course work –marked exercises One-to-one help/instruction Help desk (IT & Library topics) Fact sheets

What do you expect of Year 1 students?

At the moment … Chemistry, Engineering and Physics –Library induction –Library catalogue –Borrowing –Web searching, bibliographies, plagiarism (not Chemistry) –Linked to course work –Marked exercises Not sophisticated/complicated –sessions to build skills/confidence and provide building block for Year 2/3/4 sessions

In the future? Extend disciplinary coverage Involvement in course induction Go beyond the basics Electronic books - ebrary Offer ad hoc sessions Just let us know what you need … QML Floor 2, x3287
