People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Safety Performance Excellence Curve

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Safety Culture Evolution Model 1.Perceptions – Safety is very important to the Principal 2.Attitudes – I like working where my safety is important 3.Values – I should always consider safety when making workplace decisions 4.Decisions – I decide to do a task more slowly but safely 5.Expectations – I expect that my Principal will support my decision +/- 6.Behaviours – I do the task slowly but safely 7.Experiences – My Principal criticises me for taking so long, or My Principal praises me for doing the task safely 8.Stories – I tell my fellow workers what happened and they repeat the story

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Risk Management Hazard Identification Risk Analysis Risk Treatment Monitoring and Review Communication and Consultation Risk Assessment

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Risk Assessments – Quality v Quantity? Pareto Principle: Vilfredo Pareto, through data analysis, was able to demonstrate that 80% of the land in Italy belonged to 20% of the families. Similarly, on a statistical basis, 80% of your risk exposure can be attributed to 20% of your hazards.

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Risk Assessments – Prioritise and Focus! Focus: Initially, identify the 20% of activities that create 80% of your risk exposure. Complete risk assessments for the 20% in consultation with others who may also be involved with the activities– do them thoroughly, do them well! Use the risk assessment process to develop a common understanding about the hazards and the methods that are chosen to control the risk exposure.

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division The Real Reason Why We Do Safety! 1.Safety Processes 2.Perceptions3.Behaviours 4. Accident Rates Risk Assessments Workplace Inspections Safe Work Procedures Training Are safety processes affecting how people are thinking about safety? Do the safety processes and resulting changes in perceptions impact what people do in the workplace? (Common Practice) Reported incidents Reported injuries

People and Executive Services Group – People and Productivity Division Funding for OHS Issues Based on Level of Risk Emergency Maintenance- High Risk Contact DTZ, for immediate assessment Emergency maintenance funding is available Breakdown Maintenance- Medium Risk Interim measures can be applied while awaiting budget allocation Preventative Maintenance- Low Risk Establish a budget to maintain infrastructure to avoid costly fixes.
