Inventors and Scientists Shale Oil Explorers Challenge

Why? To develop a range of skills: Research – internet and book based Independent working Presentation – written and oral Working to deadlines

Are you up for the challenge? History is a fascinating topic however it is not just about hearing stories from the past. To be a HISTORIAN you have to be able to interpret sources, gather information and be able to explain the impact of an event or person on society.

Shale Oil Explorers Challenge To research and present your findings on an individual involved in shale mining in West Lothian. You need to choose someone who has left a lasting impression. You can choose anyone from the INVENTORS and SCIENTISTS section on the website.

Time Scale Your teacher will tell you how much time you will get to complete the challenge. There will be some work to be completed at home. You will need at least a period for your teacher to explain the challenge. Some time to research your findings You will also need time to present to the class.

What am I expected to do? For your chosen person you need to research about their life. You need to cover: Who they are – biography of their life What they did to become well known Why they have left a lasting impression on shale mining in West Lothian and elsewhere. Ideally you will spend one period researching each of these three areas.

What do I need to produce? You should produce the following: Write – A written piece of work summarising your chosen person – approx 250 words which MUST be put into your own words. Say-A short presentation (2 mins) to the class on your personal but not simply reading out your written summary. How you present this is up to you? Make – A made object which is linked to your person. Do-Your research has to come from at least 2 sources – one website and one book. Your challenge will be assessed under: WRITE, SAY, MAKE and DO.

How will I be assessed? The table on the next page will explain what the teacher is looking for and what YOU should produce. Everyone will be issued with a self- assessment sheet to complete the challenge.

Internet Challenge Level 3 Self AssessmentTeacher Assessment Write- I can put my findings on my chosen scientist into my own words. I can structure my written work appropriately and take care with spelling and punctuation. Make- I can design and make an item that is linked to my chosen scientist. This item is well made and attractively presented. Say- I can speak clearly and confidently in front of the class. I am able to make eye contact and not just read from my notes. Do- I can carry out research on my chosen person using both the Shale Oil Explorers website and textbooks.
