Improve Own Learning and Performance This is a very important skill If you can analyse how you work – you can make improvements, which will help you in the future You must be able to plan an activity, taking into account timescales and possible ‘pit falls’ (action points) You must also be able to reflect (analyse) what you have done and what improvements can be made for next time (none of us are perfect!)

REMEMBER This qualification at this level requires you to carry out two different activities. Each activity must have – an ‘overview’ (what you have been asked to do) two learning targets (you must learning something in order to improve the overall outcome) and corresponding action point (how you are going to achieve this) Plan Do Review

Example Task – (PLAN) Example 1 – As part of my level 3 hairdressing, I have to complete a written assignment about colour correction. I have some knowledge of colour, have completed a workshop on colour correction and have been asked to present written case studies. In order for me to do this I need to improve my research skills and learn how to write a formal report. Learning Target 1 – To improve my research skills Action points – Go to the library to learn about researching library books Go to ICT workshop to ask about research techniques Session on ‘advance search’ techniques Go to Learning Centre to ask for information on research techniques Make notes in session with tutor on ‘key words’ (see evidence) Practice ‘advance search’ on Google (see evidence in portfolio) Learning Target 1 – To learn how to write a formal report Action points – Go to Learning Centre and ask for information on layouts for formal reports and what should be included Attend session with tutor and make notes on Look on internet at different report formats and choose the most appropriate (see evidence) Write up my draft report (evidence) Write up final report taking into account amendments pointed out by my tutor (evidence) information in a report Action points – Learn about what information should be included in an introduction Learn about evaluation of report Learn about referencing within the report on in a report Action points – Learn about what information should be included in an introduction Learn about evaluation of report Learn about referencing within the report

Example 2 - I want to learn about PowerPoint presentations as I’m doing a presentation to the rest of my group. Learning Target 1 Learn some techniques from the ‘Teach – ICT’ website Action points – Learn about PowerPoint presentations by watching my tutor giving a presentation and noting what they do Attend the IT workshop and ask for advice on how to set up a PowerPoint presentation Gather the research Learn about ‘transitions’ between slides Learn how to have moving images on slides to keep the audience engaged Learn how to add sounds on the PowerPoint Create the PowerPoint

Learning Target 2 Improve my presentation skills and learn how to present information to a group of people Action points – Make sure I have sufficient ‘speaker’ notes Make sure that I feel confident enough to speak in front of a group (practice with a smaller group first) Learn how to structure what I say to the group to keep them interested Learn about keeping the audience engaged, eye contact, body language, tone of voice, etc. Learn about what handouts I should give to the audience to ensure that they have enough to help them to understand the subject, but not too much so that they feel they don’t have to listen to what I have to say Gather feedback from the group to help me to learn for the future

Learning Styles You must use at least two different learning styles, i.e. watching, asking questions, doing, etc. You must state why you have chosen these, e.g. you know this works well for you as you’ve used this style before – or I’m trying something new…… In the review section you must review the task AND your learning style – did it work for you – how/why? Would you use it again?

External Moderation feedback Read the specifications – what you have to do in order to pass this qualification (your tutor has access to these - on Moodle) Start with Part A questions (skills for improving underpinning knowledge) Assessor must assess (show assessment) Must show ‘real’ planning, doing and reviewing Ensure all of the questions in the workbook are FULLY completed Must have ‘sufficient’ detail – one word or one sentence answers will not do! Must refer to learning style chosen – different one for each example Must include ‘appropriate’ evidence

My observations from looking at your portfolios – an overview (not every portfolio) Unsure of what the task is (got to page 14 before I realised what you were trying to do) or had no idea what you were trying to achieve One line answers – not acceptable Action points not specific to learning target Evidence is of the colour task only – not necessarily the learning targets, i.e. improving research techniques and learning how to write a formal report Had an the principal external moderator look over them – he agreed with my observations.
