1 “I Can” Statements 5 th English/Writing 2nd Six Weeks

2 Ongoing/Year-Long Skills  I can spell words that I use and read often or are tricky to spell.  I can write in print and cursive so that others can read what I write.  I can use correct page format (paragraphs, margins, indentations, titles). I can use capitals at the beginning of the sentence, for proper nouns and adjectives, in titles, abbreviations, and quotations, and in parts of friendly and business letters. I can end my sentence with the correct punctuation.

3 “I Can” Unit 3  I can speak and write using verbs that agree with the subject in both simple and compound sentences.  I can speak and write so that the verb is in the correct place among other words in the sentence.  I can write a contraction.  I can use commas between items in a series and before coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences.  I can identify and use the verbs of “be” and “have”.  I can tell the difference in a linking verb and an action verb and can use them correctly.  I can ID/use past, present, and future tense verbs.  I can ID/use irregular verb.

4 “I Can” Unit 9 (part 1)  I can describe the meaning of…  prompt  critique  I can write within a given time limit.  I can write to a narrative prompt.  I can pick a topic to write about.  I can use graphic organizers (listing, clustering, story maps, webs).  I can identify the audience for which I am writing.  I can identify setting, characters, plot, conflict, point of view, and theme.  I can write my paragraphs in sequential order.  I can use quotation marks along with capitals and end marks in a written conversation.  I can revise my writing to make my ideas more clear.

5 “I Can” Unit 9 (part 2)  I can use the Tennessee Writing Assessment rubric to evaluate my own writing and the writing of others.  I can write for different people and different reasons (entertain, persuade, inform, describe, demonstrate knowledge, answer questions, respond to literature, and acquire knowledge).  I can use the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing/proofing, evaluating, and publishing.  I can list effects of media on my everyday life.  I can tell how two people, places, things, or ideas are alike and different.  I can explain how the meaning of a written story changes when it is told in a visual way (e.g., photographs, PowerPoint, dioramas, videos, movies, television, etc.)

6 “I Can” Unit 9 (part 3) I can be an active listener by making eye contact, facing the speaker, and using appropriate facial expressions. I can retell what was said. I can describe the meaning of “oral presentation”. I can write and give a presentation using pictures, graphics, or props. I can use the correct voice level in different settings (informal/formal situations). I can memorize and retell a passage that the teacher has assigned or I have chosen myself.
