Apostrophes and Colons are special punctuation marks. RuleExample An apostrophe is used to make a contraction. Its cold outside (It is) An apostrophe is used to form the possessive. Jays hat was black and gold. A colon is used to introduce a list of items. Please place these things in your suitcase : shoes, socks, shorts, and shirts. A colon is used in time expressions between the hour and the minutes. The bus is leaving at 2:45 sharp.
