Writing Feedback

You must use a range of sentences! At least three people in this class wrote paragraphs that were just one long sentence! To use one, short sentence as a paragraph for effect is good. To not use any punctuation at all is very, very bad!

For example: Short, simple sentence for effect: It’s just not good enough. Compound sentence: It is unfair to make students pay for driving lessons and it discourages young people from becoming safe drivers. Complex sentence: It is vital that young people learn to drive early, as it encourages safe driving. To encourage safe driving, it is vital that young people learn to drive early. It is vital, to encourage safe driving, for young people to learn to drive early.

A LOT a lot is two words e.g. I like that a little I like that a lot “allot” is a different word altogether!

There/they’re/their You have to learn the difference! e.g. There are a lot of people in this room. The book is over there. They’re my favourite trainers. This is their best album yet! Do you know where those girls went? They left their bags behind.

to/too/two We are going to the park. [towards] I am coming too. [as well] We are leaving in two hours. [number]

Never start a sentence with a numeral. e.g. you want to say “71% of all teenagers say they want to learn to drive as early as possible.” Either: Put something in front of it – “According to a recent survey, 71%....” Or: Write it out in full: “Seventy-one percent of all teenagers…”

Never! Never say anything is: more faster more better Because the “er” makes the word mean more. e.g. She is tall. Her sister is taller. This is good. This is better. This is the best. This car is fast. This one is faster. This is even faster. This is the fastest.

apostrophes Forgetting apostrophes is a good way to lose marks. Jane’s book. The girl’s book. Jess’ book. The girls’ book. Two o’clockcan’tshan’t Weren’twe’veI’ve Couldn’tJane’s got a book Won’t belonging missing letter
