Welcome to 1 st grade Parent Night! September 10, 2009

Essential Question: What will your child learn in 1 st grade?

Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) Reading Math Language Arts Science Social Studies

Pre and Post Tests Given at the beginning and end of each 9 weeks. Scores are posted inside school and on the Ware County Schools website.

Pre and Post Tests give teachers information on skills your child already knows and what they need to work on.

Promotion Requirements 1st grade students must pass reading and math with a yearly average of 70 or higher. They must also pass at least two of the following:  Language Arts  Science  Social Studies

Barrow’s Basics

CRCT Criterion Reference Competency Test

What is the CRCT? The Criterion Reference Competency Test is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS). This information is used to diagnose individual student strengths and weaknesses.

This year the CRCT will be given on April 26 through May 1. Two weeks after Spring Break. Students will be tested on the Georgia Performance Standards in Reading, Language Arts, and Math. When is the CRCT?

Homework

What homework should I look for?  Your child will have homework on Monday’s, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. The homework could consist of reading, math or language homework.  Please check your child’s folder each night! Homework should be placed on the right side of their folder!  Right= Return to school / Left= Leave at home!

 Please make sure that you check over your child’s homework and make sure that it is correct. If you see that some of the homework is incorrect, please go back over the problems missed with your child. Homework helps reinforce the skills taught at home. Practice is important!!!!!!!  Reading notes are sent home on Monday’s. This note tells the student and parent what to read. You may see that your child needs to read the story every night. Please make this as part of their homework.

Accelerated Reader (AR)

What is AR? AR= Accelerated Reader AR is a reading program that we have to encourage reading. Please read the library book with your child and ask them questions about it. You may need to read the book several times before your child fully understands !!! That is O.k.!!!!!

Your child will take a test on the book. The test consists of 5-10 questions. Points will be awarded based on the number correct. Each book is worth.5 points. Each student should take a minimum of 2 tests per week!!!!
