Plot Act 1, Scene 1  In the streets of Verona, the serving men of the Montague and Capulet houses get in a fight. Sampson and Gregory brag and tease each other until their enemies approach and then they shut up. Their words overdo their actions, they don’t want to start anything so they wait for the Montagues to. The Lord and Lady’s of both houses and the Prince comes in and tells them that if they disturb the streets again they will be banished. Romeo is heart broken over Rosaline and Benvolio tries to comfort him.

Plot Act 1, Scene 2  Paris asks Capulet if he can marry his daughter, Juliet and he says he wants to wait a few years and let his daughter see the world and to try to woo her. He sends a servant out to send invitations to a party. Romeo and Benvolio find out about it and they decide to go.

Plot Act 1, Scene 3  Lady Capulet goes to see Juliet about marrying Paris. Nurse rambles on about how Juliet will be 14 in two weeks. Juliet says that she hasn’t even thought about marriage. Nurse thinks that marrying Paris would be a good idea so Juliet decides to meet him at the party and consider his offer.

Plot Act 1, Scene 4  Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio, and friends are on their way to crash the party. Romeo is still depressed and does not want to go. Mercutio tries to cheer Romeo up by talking about his dream and Romeo thinks something bad is going to happen.

Plot Act 1, Scene 5  Lord Capulet welcomes everyone to his party. Romeo sees Juliet across the room and falls in “love” with her. Tybalt overhears Romeo talking about Juliet and wants to kill him instantly. Lord Capulet stops Tybalt from fighting and tells him to calm down or leave. Romeo and Juliet meet but do not know each other’s names, they instantly fall in love. As people are leaving they each find out who they are, which is each other’s enemies. Both are depressed at the discovery.
