1. Romeo and Juliet
Act I

2. Act I, Scene 1
A fight breaks out between two rival families, the Capulets and the Montagues.
Benvolio tries to stop the fight, but Tybalt attacks him.
Prince Escalus is furious about the street fighting caused by the ancient feud.

3. Act I, Scene 1
He warns Old Capulet and Old Montague that they will be put to death if the fighting continues.
Romeo is depressed because the girl he loves does not love him.
Benvolio pledges to help Romeo forget the girl or die trying.

4. Act I, Scene 2
Count Paris wants to marry Juliet. Old Capulet says his daughter is too young, but gives Paris permission to court her.
He invites Paris to a party he is giving that night.
Romeo finds out there is going to be a party at the Capulet’s where Rosaline will be present.

5. Act I, Scene 2
Benvolio encourages Romeo to go to the party to compare Rosaline to the other women.

6. Act I, Scene 3
Juliet’s mother tells Juliet that Paris wants to marry her.
The nurse stays to listen and rambles on about her fond memories of Juliet as a young child.
Juliet is not excited about her parents choosing the man for her to marry.

7. Act I, Scene 4
Romeo and Benvolio and Mercutio decide to crash the party at the Capulet’s house.
Mercutio tries to cheer Romeo by telling a mystical story about Queen Mab.
But Romeo will not be cheered up.
He says that some terrible event, caused by the stars, will begin at the party.

8. Act I, Scene 5
Tybalt is angry when he sees Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutio at the party.
Tybalt tells Lord Capulet that he will behave at the party, but promises revenge.
Meanwhile, Romeo and Juliet meet at the party and instantly fall in love.
After they part, they learn each other’s true identity.
