Taking advantage of the European labour market EURES Adviser Hallgeir Jenssen, NAV Troms Svolvær, 20 Sept.2010

NAV, Side 2 2 topics  How can young people find a job in the European labour market, adapted to their skills?  How can regions find workers with the right skills for their local need?

NAV, Side 3 About NAV  The Norwegian Labour and Welfare administration (NAV) – Administer a large proportion of the most important welfare benefits and social security schemes – The Labour and welfare administration Act – The National Insurance Act – The Labour Marked Act – The Social Welfare Act

NAV, Side 4 About EURES  EURES (EURopean Employment Services)  is a cooperation between EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. The cooperation is designed to promote the free movement of workers within the EU/EEA.  In all EU/EEA countris there is 800 EURES Advisers.  In Norway, EURES is an integrated service within NAV. 30 EURES advisers are distributed across all counties, and are located with NAV at county level or with NAV local services.

NAV, Side 5 EURopean Employment Services EU + EEA = 31 countries

NAV, Side 6 How can young people find a job in the European labour market, adapted to their skills?  Several countries/regions have a very high number of unemployed young people, including graduates  EURES arrange Job Fairs in all EU/EEA countries. We give information about living and working. Using brochures, talk to people at our stand, and give detailed lectures (45 min). Employers are invited to participate together with us or with a stand on their own.  Our nearest neighbour Sweden is one of the countries with high youth unemployment. EURES Norway was present on 52 Job Fairs in Sweden last year.  Many young Swedes get their first job ever in Norway.

NAV, Side 7 How can regions find workers with the right skills for their local need?  Employers must cooperate with the regional NAV – Important that someone has the big picture  Use EURES – EURES has a very good network. We know which countries have surplus and shortage of workers Example: The south-west region of Norway needed several Marine/Petroleum Engineers in By 2008; 150 Portuguese Engineers had arrived, several with spouse and family.
