Classification

History Aristotle organized living things into 2 main categories: –Plants –Animals

Plants Plants were then separated according to their stems: –Trees –Shrubs –Herbs

Animals Animals were separated according to their habitat: –On land –In the air –In water

Modern Classification Carolus Linnaeus Organisms are organized according to similar characteristics Came up with the 7 orders of taxonomy Universal – latin is used

Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species

DOMAIN New level of classification Most broad Includes –Archaebacteria – bacteria living under extreme conditions –Eubacteria – the Germs –Eukaryote

Binomial Nomenclature Linnaeus’ 2 name naming system 1 st name = genus 2 nd name = species Only 1 st word is capitalized and both words are underlined seperately Ex. Homo sapien

Relationships The more taxon 2 organisms have in common, the more similar they are They have similar traits and body shapes Ex. Canis familiaris and Canis lupus
