2 nd Grade Ms. Flood & Mrs. Ayd

Find your child’s seat. Please read the letter your child left for you, and take a moment to write them a note in response! Begin to fill out any of the papers in your child’s folder. Please return them at your earliest convenience.

I am Ms. Flood, and I am the Ballyhoos’ lead teacher! I am new to the Keys, but I have spent most of my life in Florida. I received my Bachelor's degree from the University of Central Florida in Early Childhood Education, and I am currently working towards my Master's degree in Reading Education. I also have an ESOL and Reading Endorsement. This is my 5 th year teaching. I spent my first three years teaching at an international school in the Philippines. It was an amazing experience that taught me a lot about teaching students of different backgrounds, abilities, and interests. I have taught Kindergarten, 2nd grade, and 3rd grade in the past. I am so excited to be returning to 2nd grade again this year!

Mrs. Ayd grew up in Iowa and Maryland. She earned her Bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education from Towson University. She previously taught prekindergarten and has worked for the Early Intervention Program of New Jersey. This is her third year at Sigsbee. She has been a support teacher in first and fourth grade. This will be her first year in second grade. Mrs. Ayd is a Coast Guard wife and proud mom of two Sigsbee students. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and her dog Daisey. She is looking forward to another exciting school year!

Jupiter Remind (info in folder) Phone: x63320 Class website:

Arrival: Students are marked tardy if they arrive after 8:10. Please check your child in at the office. Dismissal: If you need to pick up your child early, please go to the office to do so. Please notify me and the office of any changes in transportation. Rainy Dismissal: Typically on rainy days students will dismiss from the cafeteria. On Wednesdays because of enrichment, it may be the library. Planned Absences: Please send a note A.S.A.P. so that we can excuse your child for their absence.

Lunch is $3.00. Please use Paypal to pay for your child’s lunch. All medicine should be given to the nurse directly. Please do not send it in with your child. Snack: We are doing a class snack this year. Please visit our class website to sign up if you have not. Water bottles: Please label and send daily! Shoes: Please wear proper footwear daily. We have recess every day.

Everyone in our school environment will treat each other with respect and dignity at all times. Logical consequences should directly relate to the rule that was broken, though the consequences do not have to be the same each time. Changes in thinking and behavior take time. The goal of this approach is to have students move toward acting responsibly more than acting obediently.

Morning Meeting Writing Workshop Lunch/Recess Calendar Math Math Science/SS Second Steps Specials Reading Workshop

Monday : Science & Music Tuesday : Art Wednesday : P.E. Thursday : Computer & Science Friday : Library & P.E.

Reading Workshop Reading is taught through a workshop model. Instruction will begin with a short mini-lesson. Students will have time for guided practice. While students are working at centers or independently, I will administer small group guided reading lessons. Students will also participate in Independent Silent Reading. Reading conferences take place during this time.

Writing Workshop Each day Writer’s Workshop will begin with a short mini-lesson which focuses on a specific skill. The students will then be given the opportunity to practice this skill in their writing. During this time, I will confer with students or lead a small group. Mentor texts are often used during the mini- lessons and allow for students to learn craft from real authors.

Our Math program is based on the Florida Standards. The methods we use are often different from the way most of us learned. There is more focus on the “why” and student explanation of thinking. Resources: Go Math! XtraMath (please practice facts at home) Calendar Math

Integration into other subjects Science Class Science Units of Study : Inquiry & tools/Crustaceans (first 3 weeks) Study of Universe (until October) Study of Earth (until January) Study of Sea (late March/early April) Anatomy and Physiology (topical inquiry)

Homework is sent home on Wednesdays and checked on Tuesdays. All papers will come home in the C.I.R.C.U.S. Folder, and all homework is to be completed in the Homework Notebook.

Reading Students are expected to read, or listen to someone read, every night for at least 20 minutes! Reading is to be recorded on their Reading Log. * RAZ Kids counts towards nightly reading! Writing Students are asked to write at least 1 dated entry each week. A list of writing ideas will be given. Beginning of the year expectations are 5-6 sentences with proper capitalization and punctuation.

Word Study Words Their Way is the program Sigsbee uses to teach phonics and spelling skills. The program is based largely on your child completing word sorts that help him/her compare different letter and sound patterns. Your child will work with the same set of words over a two week period. At the end of the two weeks, your child will be assessed on these words to determine whether or not they have mastered the intended skill. Every two weeks in the C.I.R.C.U.S. folders, two sets of same words will be sent home. Please keep these words for the two week period. One set is for you to keep as a master copy. The other set is for your child to cut and complete the word sort activities from the Tic Tac Toe board. The students are required to complete three activities from this board a week. Your child will receive a Words Their Way Tic Tac Toe board in their homework folder. This will be the only time the Words Their Way Tic Tac Toe board will be sent home. If the board is misplaced, you can print an extra copy of the board from the Sigsbee Second Grade website.

Math Math packets will be sent home as review of previously learned skills. These will go home at the end of every math unit. At the beginning of the year, students will be reviewing skills from 1 st grade. * These are to be done at your own leisure and do not need to be returned. Extra Practice Websites will be listed on the homework sheet in the C.I.R.C.U.S. folder. Feel free to request additional resources!
