Presentation transcript:

In 1955, the first solar-powered car was publicly demonstrated. It was a 15-inch Sunmobile built by William G. Cobb of the General Motors Corporation. Light energy falling on 12 selenium photoelectric cells created electric current to power a tiny electric motor that turned a driveshaft connected to the car's rear axle by a pulley. It was one of 253 free exhibits of the General Motors Powerama, Chicago, Ill. seen by over 2,500,000 visitors during this 28-day, $7,000,000 event spread over 1,000,000 sq. ft. on the shore of Lake Michigan. It showcased the company's modern diesel power, including an oil well, cotton gins, cranes, earth-movers, trucks, tractors, military equipment, a submarine, a shrimp boat, Aerotrain, an aluminum foundry and other machinery. Today in Science History August 31 st, 2015 Turn in Syllabus Signature

Objectives Syllabus Highlights Handout books Nature of Science Quiz Answers Assignment Research assigned statement and find more evidence supporting whether the statement is true or false.

Syllabus Restroom Policy Classroom instruction is very important and that is why it is imperative that you are in the classroom as much as possible. You may not use the restroom for the first and last five minutes of class. You may use the restroom during class if it is an emergency. Pretend that you are in a car on a trip and you have to use the restroom could you hold it until your next rest area?

Headings For all assignments, you will need to write your full name, date, period, and mailbox# at the top of your paper if not already indicated on the sheet.

Materials Each day please bring: Binder Paper Pencil/pen Calculator Chromebook

Retake Policy Students can retake an assessment up until one week after receiving the assessment back. Students will need to complete a retake form in order to retake an assessment. Students will take a new assessment and they will receive the new grade even if it is lower than the original grade.

Homework Policy Students must redo homework within two days of receiving the homework back or from being checked in class if they would like a higher grade. In order to receive credit students will write out the question they missed and the correct answer to the question on a separate sheet of paper and attach this to the original assignment. The highest grade you can receive on a “homework” redo is 83% or “C”.

Books I will dismiss you by columns to pick up a textbook and a disappearing spoon book from the lab table. After you sit back down write your name on the front left inside cover. In the disappearing spoon book there should be a label with a number on it. In the textbook write your name in the normal spot. When I call your name give me the label number for the textbook and the label number for the disappearing spoon book.

What are the three domains of science? A body of knowledge A set of methods/processes A way of knowing

Nature of Science Quiz Your group will be responsible for researching the two statements that I assign you. Tomorrow you will have some class time to prepare your thoughts. You will share your evidence with the class as to why the statement is true and why it is false. You may use the article and/or the internet.

What is science & what is Chemistry? Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.

Closing Keep researching your two statements tonight. Come prepared to share with your group tomorrow. Make sure desks are aligned and clean up your area.
