New York State Resource Sharing Summit June 5 & 6, 2007 Saratoga Springs, NY

Purpose Explore successful resource sharing models and programs currently in use throughout NYS and beyond Explore what the future of resource sharing might look like Discuss how new systems can work to facilitate more effective resource sharing amongst all libraries Develop a plan of action or next steps for future collaborations

Attendees Participants came from a variety of libraries including: –SUNY –Private 4 Year –3 R Councils –Public Libraries and Library Systems –Museum/Special Libraries Participants held a variety of positions including: –Directors/Administrators –ILL Librarians –Collection Development

Summit Program Designed to explore best practices and to allow for discussion and debate among attendees –Included presentations, general sessions, roundtables and a general wrap-up session

Summit Program The program consisted of: –Resonant Resource Sharing: Transformation Strategies for Resource Sharing Cyril Oberlander, Director of Interlibrary Services, University of Virginia Cyril Oberlander, Director of Interlibrary Services, University of Virginia –Director’s Panel: Resource Sharing in NYS, Challenges and Opportunities –Matt Goldner, Executive Director, Cooperative Collection Services, OCLC

Seek alternative ways of doing things –Better perception on serving user in future –To change some of our ILL practices to incorporate greater efficiencies in workflow. To educate/inform my director & staff re: Statewide efforts, future directions.

Next Steps: Action! Creation of the two working groups that will be coordinated by Nylink –Delivery and Discovery Make Summit proceedings available

Working Groups: Each group will meet in person and then by monthly conference calls Each group will provide a report with any recommendations for the library community Members will represent a wide variety of library types – Interested in participating? Please let me know!

Working Groups: Discovery Working group –Will advise interested members of the New York library community on issues and challenges in providing a single statewide user-facing discovery tool that knows where a user is coming from and the content delivery/resource sharing options available to that person

Discovery Working Group Research the feasibility of and need for a statewide discovery tool Inventory existing services Identify costs and timeline for implementation Provide recommendations for adoption of a discovery tool that provides options for different types of libraries and users

Working Groups: Delivery Working Group –Will advise interested members of the NYS library community of the issues and challenges in developing a statewide delivery system that works for different types of libraries and groups, (may coordinate with existing systems), with a scalable pricing structure.

Delivery Working Group Inventory existing delivery services Examine issues of linking services together Provide recommendations for implementing a coordinated system

Summit Proceedings Creation of website that will contain notes from roundtables, presentations and evaluations Dynamic site where new information related to resource sharing in NYS will be posted
