3 Ilm-o-Amal Welfare Association Develop and manage programs to help the poor & needy Ilm-o-Amal is a non-political and non-sectarian organization. It is registered under Societies Act XXI of 1860 as a welfare organization Registration No of Exemption from Income Tax in Pakistan under CIT/(LEGAL DIVISION)/R.T.O/2008/958 DATED 12/11/2008(valid up to Dec 31, 2009) Vision To be a leading community of volunteers in Pakistan Mission

4 Ilm-o-Amal Strategic Goals  Creating awareness & recognition of the value of volunteerism  Creating awareness on the social message of our religion  Creating social welfare programs  Providing a forum for knowledge sharing  Identifying the required skills and competencies for a volunteer  Defining training and professional development standards  Disseminate the message through all possible channels of communication

5 Ilm-o-Amal Journey  Started as a volunteer network to help the victims of Oct ’05 earthquake in Pakistan  Applied for registration under Societies Registration Act - Jul ‘06  Launched operations - Feb ’07  Issued first child scholarship, income loan and family help - Feb ’07  Received registration – Apr ’07  Received tax exemption – Mar ‘08  Reached 100 th member - Jun ‘08  Awarded 100 th child scholarship - Oct ‘08

9 Ilm-o-Amal Programs ProgramPurpose Children ScholarshipTo award scholarships to children of poor families Up-to Grade 12 Also awarded higher education to deserving cases Family HelpTo provide family assistance to families living below poverty level For grocery, medicines and basic necessities of life Income OpportunitiesProvide interest-free loans to poor families to provide a source of income Any member of Ilm-o-Amal can refer a needy child or family for help All the help is provided after a through assessment of income and needs of a family

10 What is Volunteerism?  Volunteerism is to:  Be Selfless: It is the opposite of selfish  Be well-trained: Know what you are doing as a volunteer  Be dependable: Do what you say you’ll do and do your best.  Be open-minded: learn and experience new things.  Be respectful: Show respect to others and their cultures  Be humble: Do not brag or feel superior  Be friendly: Treat others like friends, and they’ll do the same  Recommended one another to perseverance and patience, and (also) recommended one another to pity and compassion. Al- Quran [90:17]

11 What is Our Model?  We use Internet as our communication medium  Beneficiary Management System (BMS) is our main system  BMS is Internet-based and enables the:  Members to submit applications for helping needy people  Coordinators & Field Volunteers to verify the application  Management to take decision on application  Donors to review and sponsor application  We eliminated un-necessary overheads by  Using volunteers and part-time staff  Using Internet as our office

17 Starting your Chapter – What do you need  5 members to do the following tasks  Work closely with IOA coordinators  Help IOA manage reference/payments to beneficiaries  Review the status of beneficiaries  Promote membership  Raise funds  General Office work  Work from your home via Beneficiary Management System (BMS)  Hold events to raise awareness, raise funds, discuss ideas  Meeting location and other meeting needs  Invite speakers from other chapters
